Miaka Yuuki is the heroine of Fushigi Yuugi. Her role in the series is that of the high priestess Suzaku no Miko. She acts as an intercessor between the Peacock god Suzaku and men. Her destiny is to find the seven Seishi of Suzaku, seven holy warriors identifiable by charecters located some place on their bodies. Once all seven have been gathered then using their power she is able to summon Suzaku. Who then grants her wishes.

An honest and kind soul, Miaka is very self sacrificing despite her immature nature. A perpetual slave to her stomach, she is constantly hungry, and seems to posses a latent ability to consume vast quantities of food without putting on any weight. She is more than a little silly and her logic has to be seen to be believed, but her sunny disposition and large heart quickly wins her the affections and loyalty of all her Seishi.

In her world Miaka is a High School student desperately trying to pass the entrance exam to the presigious High School Jonan Acedemy. Throughout most of the first season this is a constant cause for concern for her, since many believe that she will not be up to the task. Because of this Miaka is quickly convinced to accept the role of Suzaku no Miko in the World within the book.

From the third episode Miaka become romantically entangled with her Seishi Tamahome. As his extreme methods of protecting her, quickly capture her heart. Tamahome, is reluctant at first to return her feelings but soon, he responds to her feelings of love with a passion that surprises even Miaka.
