Places & Things

Places & Things in the Tenchi Universe:

LIGHT HAWK WINGS
Light Hawk Wings [in Japanese: Kou-ou-yoku] - The light hawk wings are defensive weapons that any 0-2 generation Jurian warship are capable of generating. They take the appearance of propeller blades, and are capable of projecting a sphere of energy a long distance. The wings do not absorb or deflect energy they dissolve it, this makes them virtually undefeatable. The Tsunami ship is over 128x as powerful as Ryo-oh (Aeka’s 2nd Gen. Warship), who can only produce 3 wings.

In OAV 6 & OAV 11, Tenchi generates LHW's without the aid of a Jurian ship. Once to defeat Kagato, and once to invert a black hole.

The Light Hawk Wings do not exist in the TV series.

TENCHIKEN (MASTER KEY)
Tenchiken is a Master key. The master keys are devices that "drain" power from the Jurai trees. The Jurain Family all have keys, and in addition, the keys are given by the Jurain Trees, to a noble which they consider to be their partners.

According to Tenchi 101, the keys are formed from the sap & bark of the tree. Tenchiken is a level 1 key, meaning that it can control any Generation 1 tree (like Funaho, Yosho’s ship) or 1.5, 2 or 3rd generation ship (For instance it can control Ryu-oh which is a 2nd Generation ship). While Aeka's key (her tiara on her head) can only control 2nd & 3rd Gen. ships(since her ship is only a 2 Generation).

In the TV series, no such link is established, and the Keys are more important, especially in the Movie. [source: Tenchi 101]

THE GEMS:
Ryoko originally had three gems, according to legend, the gems are the source of her powers. As Yousho sliced each of the gems off her, the gem was absorbed in Tenchiken.

In OAV 13, we learn that the gems have the same power source that the Jurain Tree's do. Therefore, it is possible that once Ryoko re-gains all of the gems, she will be able to generate Light Hawk Wings. According to 101, Ryoko with all of the gems would be as powerful as Tsunami. Ryoko always wears a earring in her left ear, it looks like the jewel, but it is only its replica. "I was determined to play with Tenchi as soon as I had re-created the jewel" (ep.5, Ryoko). The fact Ryoko made it herself proves that this is a replica. The real jewel cannot be even destroyed, not to mention created. It is an emergency substitute for Ryoko and not as powerful as the real one. The replica is very easy for Ryoko to make once she is outside of the seal. Within it, however, she had to use her own energy to make one, being sealed away from the outside. She cannot get any more power even if she makes more than one replica. Tenchi cut her left arm off in ep.1 and the replica exploded. She didn't care too much as she can make one any time. After she got one real jewel back from Tenchi in ep.2, the replica became even less valuable.

THE MASAKI HOME:
The Masaki Home is where Tenchi & the rest of the girls live. Aeka and Sasami share a room, Ryoko doesn’t have a room (she prefers to be in Tenchi's room anyways ;-). Sasami normally does all of the cooking, and the chores are split among everyone. Washu has converted a broom closet downstairs into a sub-dimensional portal which leads to her huge sub-space lab (A whole solar system ;-0 .

In the OAV series, Tenchi lived in the middle of some Suburbs. When Aeka came, Ryoko transported the house onto her ship. When Ryo-ohki later crashed, it happened to be by Tenchi's grandfathers shrine & Ryoko's cave. The house burns down in OAV 6, but is rebuilt.

In the TV series, the house has always been near the Shrine.

Ryoko's Cave:
In the OAV series, Ryoko is banished to a cave, where she is kept alive by a small amount of power. This is the Masaki shrine. Later, Tenchi breaks into the shrine, and ends up freeing Ryoko. Ryoko had been diverting the power to keep her alive, to building up enough power to break out. While she was doing this, she watched Tenchi grow up and fell in love with him.

In the TV series, Ryoko is never banished to the cave.

Washu's Cave:
In the TV series, Washu is exiled for being a mad scientist. She lands on earth, and is imprisoned in the cave. Ryoko accidentally frees her, when Ryoko tries to get Tenchi alone in the Cave. This only happens in the TV series.

Soja:
Kagato's ship. Kagato's ship, like Ryoko, is able to draw power from the Gems. Soja is huge, all of the corridors lead to Kagato. It also has a "mirror plane" built in. Washu is trapped in the Mirror Plane.

Ryo-ohki:

Ryoko's ship which turns into a cabbit (a cross between a rabbit and a cat.... ;-) It has a insane desire for Carrots, and in the OAV series, gains a human form which resembles a 3 or 4 year old girl.

Tsunami:
Tsunami is a Jurain Tree, which has a will and intelligence. According to Tenchi 101, Tsunami helped found the Jurain Empire. Like most of the Trees, Tsunami has a battle ship, which is capable of generating 10 Light Hawk Wings. In addition, Tsunami can project herself anywhere. Tsunami is now merged with Sasami, and now resembles what Sasami will look like when she grows up.
