Akina appeared on NHK's 53rd Annual Kouhaku Utagassen on December 31, 2002. It was her first time on the show in 14 years. She had previously participated in the year-end singing contest from 1983 through 1988.

Akina's lively performance of "Kazarijanainoyo Namidawa" featured the musical arrangement from her self-cover album "Utahime Double Decade."
