In the ancient past, the Creator brought forth the shining jewels of the universe and all their secrets. One such jewel was the world of Septerra -it's secret hidden within it's Core. Seven distinct Layers of continents called World Shells orbit the planet, each at a different elevation. At the center of all this lies the Core, an immense bio-computer that regulates the movements of the shells.

Ancient legends tell of how the Creator fashioned into this world a way in which man himself might one day inherit His power, long after He was gone. He created twin keys that could be used to unlock the secret, granting the Gift of the Creator - the Kingdom of Heaven.

Then there arose one that the Creator and his host of Angels could not destroy ... Gemma, an inhuman Daemon who lusted after the power of God. He stormed over the world like a plague, and captured the Keys to the Core, intending to use them to inherit the Kingdom and all of its power.  In desperation and sorrow, the Creator sent Marduk, his only begotten son, to Septerra and then left forever the affairs of men.

After a battle that raged for a hundred days, Marduk defeated Gemma and retrieved the stolen Keys. Teaching that the world was not yet ready for such power, he hid the ancient relics.  But Marduk prophesized that one day, many millennia in the future, when the world was in grave danger, they would once again be found. And that the power they could unlock might save the world from it’s own destruction ...

Thousands of years later, that time is upon us ... welcome to Septerra Core.

Enter a world where the laws of nature work in strange new ways, allowing continents to orbit at different elevations around the planet. Where concentric World Shells create seven unique ecosystems and Bio-Engineering has ushered in a revolution of societal changes. Where living battleships float overhead and Junk Pirates roam the darkness. A world who's very Core is a living computer, quietly watching over the fruits of its master’s creation.

On the Outer Shell Layer above, the ancient society of the Chosen live an extravagant lifestyle, consuming mass amounts of energy and dumping their waste onto the Layers below. They have discovered the twin keys and believe that the answers to their mysteries lie in the depths of the Core. It is this Legacy that calls them from their self imposed exile, to return to the Lower Layers.

Into these events you are drawn. You take the role of a Maya, a Junk Scavenger from World Shell 2, directly below the Chosen’s Layer. It is here that you make your living, sifting through the trash to find useful items to sell, always wary of the giant ships that darken the skies above. As the Chosen and their fleet of battleships begin their descent to the Core, war looms over the land. The many nations of the Lower Levels, including your own, are threatened by the exodus and fear the destruction to come.

Leaving her home behind, Maya strikes out intending to warn the Lower nations of the coming Chosen, and soon finds herself in the middle of the battle for freedom.

Standing against Maya are the forces of Doskias, a Chosen Lord who sees himself as the savior of Septerra, and will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. Normally the Core may only be unlocked once every hundred years, at the time of The Conjunction, when the shells align briefly allowing light to reach the depths. But Doskias will not wait, and in his desire to obtain the Gift for himself, takes rash actions which unbalance the delicate clockwork of the Core ... dooming the world to destruction. Maya must stand against him. Finding allies as well as enemies in the society of the Chosen, she begins to unravel what Doskias has wrought, and starts down the path to obtaining the Gift of the Creator, prophesied as the power that will save the world.

Along the way, she will find eight companions, each with individual skills and combat techniques that will aid her in her journeys, fighting alongside her in strategic, clock-based combat, and helping her to solve the problems that lie in her way. But Maya must be careful, for her companions are not always what they seem. Some of them will not get along with each other, while others may betray her friendship.
