Hotaru is a frail young girl that has a special gift of healing others. This strange power frightens other children, so therefore, she has no friends. However, she does befriend Chibi-usa, and they become very close. She is not afraid of Hotaru's power of healing. Hotaru lives with her father, Professor Souichi Tomoe and his assistant, Kaori (Kaolinite), in a huge mansion.
Hotaru dies once, but was revived by the evil Daimon Master. She was aged and transformed into Mistress 9. Her mission was to summon Master Pharaoh 90 and to leave the world in "The Silence" (eternal winter stage). To do this, she was to remove heart crystals from human hearts to check to see if they are a carrier of one of the three talismans to form the Holy Grail (Uranus Neptune and Pluto have it). When she gets the Grail, she brings Mater Pharaoh 90 into the world.
Eventually she overcomes this evil and realizes her true destiny: Sailor Saturn. After the battle with Master Pharoah 90, she was reverted to a baby and was returned to her father.
As Sailor Saturn, Hotaru is the second most powerful Senshi, (second to Sailor Moon). Saturn uses her "Silence Glaive" which is a nifty weapon similar to the Scythe the Grim Reaper holds. Using this Glaive, she can emit deadly razor ribbons which shreads her enemy, also known as "Death Ribbon Revolution." After Sailor Saturn was reborn, she gets a knew attack called "Silence Glaive Surprise." She raises her Glaive, and it glows with purple energy. A large segment of the attack is in black and white with complete silence....how dramatic. Then she slams it to the ground creating a huge explosion, no other Senshi could produce. She uses the "Silence Wall" to create a wall of defense.
