The two elderly people who sat on both sides of her kept pretty much to themselves. She was sure that if she spoke to them, they wouldn't understand her, since they were speaking in a forein language to her. She was glad that she took French class last year. At least she'll be able to read road signs and communicate. She checked her watch. Three more hours to go, then she'll be able to see Ken. Galdon was sleeping when he heard sharp knocking on the door. He got up sleepily and opened the door. He looked at the angry face of Calbrom, his brother. "You fool." he said and pushed him out of the way. "Where is she? Where are you hiding her?" "She's not here." Galdon simply stated. "Where is she?" "You don't know?" Galdon asked in a mock innocent voice. "You are a total disgrace! Do you know how long it took me to track her down? All that work, wasted!" Calbrom shouted. "Why not just give up on her?" "You spend too much time with the humans. You are learning to forgive. I will not! She is going to die. Then we can return to a better future, with humans as our slaves!" Calbrom looked around, looking for some clue that would tell him where the girl was. "Get out of here." Galdon said in a steely tone. "I will be back, with the corpse of the girl. The girl you love. Then, you will feel the pain. I promise you." Calbrom dissapeared in a cloud of smoke. "Where ever you are, I hope you're okay, Lita." Galdon whispered. Lita picked her duffle bag up and took a deep breath. She walked off of the plane. She was so happy that she could have kissed the ground. She made it. All alone on a plane! She went into one of the airport shops and bought a map. She was glad she had brought her traveler's checks. Outside, she sat down and studdied the map. If her translation was correct, then that meant Ken was staying in a house a couple of streets from the Eifle Tower, to the south. She looked up and saw the Eifle Tower in the distance. She figured out which way was south, and walked toward the tower. "Wow!" Lita said outloud. She was standing below the Eifle Tower. Judging by the sun, it was probably near noon. Tourists were everywhere, taking pictures, buying souveneirs. Lita had no time for that. She walked in the direction she hoped was south. Soon, she came to a street sign that was on Ken's envelope. She looked down the street at the row of apartments. She slowly walked, looking for the right number. When she found it, she stood in the doorway, not sure what to do. What would he do if I just show up like this? Lita thought. She got up the courage to ring the bell. There was no answer. She rung it again. No one. Am I on the wrong doorstep? Lita thought. She was about to ring it again when she heard someone shouting from inside. The voice shouted something, and from what Lita could understand, it meant they were coming. She heard the sound of some locks being unlocked, and the door swung open. In the doorway stood a woman maybe in her fifties. She looked like a nice person, there were wrinkles near her eyes, which showed when she smile. The woman stood there smiling at her. "Oui?" the woman asked. (yes?) Lita wasn't that well with French, so she hoped the lady spoke a little English. "Bon-jour. Do you speak English?" Lita asked in a tone full of clarity. She said that very slowly. "Yes I do." the woman said in almost perfect English. "I'm probably in the wrong place, but I was wondering if there is a guy named Ken staying here?" Lita asked. "Why yes, there is. He is with my boy Marcus in school. Why do you ask?" the woman asked surprised. "I'm a friend of Ken's and it's very important that I see him." Lita said. The woman stepped out of the doorway and indicated that Lita should come in. "I'm Juliana Rojou. You are?" "Lita Kino." Lita said politely. "Nice to meet you." "Make yourself at home. I was just about to pop my pie in the oven." Juliana walked to what seemed like the kitchen. "Are you just a friend, or a girlfriend?" Juliana asked. Lita was surprised to be asked that. She hesitated, thinking of what to say. "I'm being nosy. I am sorry. Forgive me." Juliana apologized. "It's okay. Yes, I'm his girlfriend." Lita said. "Come into the kitchen and have some lunch. I am sure the boys will be back in a couple of hours." Lita walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table where Juliana sat. "Mrs. Rojou, is Ken alright?" "Please, call me Juliana. I do not want to feel any older than I am." she said. "Ken is fine. He's doing good in school, adapting to the language fairly well." "Good." Lita tried to stiffle a yawn, but it came out. "Sorry." she said. Juliana gestured to a doorway. "Why don't you take a nap. The boys won't be back until four." "I shouldn't" "Please." Juliana was being too kind. "Thank you." Lita took her bag and walked into the bedroom. There was a bunkbed pulled back to the wall and clothes everywhere. This must be where they sleep, Lita thought. It was a messy room. She chose the bottom bunk and flopped down on it. Juliana appeared in the door way, "Would you like anything? Lunch first?" "No. I'm not hungry. Thank you, though." Lita answered. Juliana closed the door, letting her sleep. At ten minutes to four, Lita woke up. At first, she was startled at the surroundings, then things became clearer. She remembered where she was and what she was doing here. She got up, made the bed and glanced at herself in the mirror. Her hair was disheveled. The hair had comed out of a pony tail and was sticking up. She took out a brush from her bag and let the hair down. She brushed it for a while and looked at the clock. Four o clock. She came out of the room and looked around. Everything in the house was still. She could here people outside, probably kids walking home from school. She walked into the kitchen and found Juliana washing dishes. "Did you have a nice nap?" Juliana asked, without looking up. "Yes. Would you like me to help with anything?" Lita asked. "No, I'm almost done. There is some hot coffee on the table, help yourself." Lita sat down, facing a window that showed the scenery in back of the apartment. She poured some coffee into a small cup and stared at it. She prefered tea, but this was okay. The coffee was steaming hot, so she set it down to cool. "They should be coming in any minute now." Juliana said. There was a doorbell chiming that almost made Lita jump off her seat. She suddenly needed the coffee to calm her nerves. She reached for it and took long sips, enjoying the bittersweet taste. "Ma! Open the door. I forgot my keys!" a voice Lita didn't recognize called. "That's my boy, Marcus." Juliana explained as she walked out of the kitchen to open the door. Lita took another long sip from the coffee cup. Ken waited for Juliana to open the door. This was not the first time Marcus forgot his keys. Good thing she was always home, or they would be locked out until nightfall. He heard the jingling of some locks and a snap of the door knob. "Don't need to yell, Marcus. I am not deaf yet!" Juliana said as a greeting. She opened the door to let them in. "Okay, Ma." "How was your day, Ken?" Juliana asked. "Fine thank you." Ken was alway polite. Juliana looked in the kitchen. "There is a young lady in the kitchen waiting for you, Ken." she said. Marcus raised his eyebrows questioning, as he followed Ken in. He almost fell over him, since Ken stopped in the doorway. Ken stopped when he saw her. The first thing he recognized was her chestnut brown hair. Although it was down, he knew who it was. He felt Marcus run into him. "Sorry." Marcus whispered. "Who is that? Don't just stand there." "Lita?" Ken said. Slowly, Lita got up, put her cup down, and turned around. She stared at him for what seemed like an eternity. He was feeling uncomfortable under the intense gaze. It was as if she was analyzing him. "Ken!" She ran up and hugged him. He hugged her tightly, realizing how much he missed this embrace. He wanted to hug her so tight, but didn't want to hurt her. "What are you doing here?" Ken asked soflty, so only she could hear. Lita's lips brushed his ears gently as she whispered, "Trouble." That one word made him freeze. Was she in danger? Where were the others? Are they alright? All these unspoken questions loomed in his eyes. Marcus coughed. Ken turned around, looking at their expectant eyes. "This is Lita, my girlfriend." he introduced. "Lita, this is Marcus. I guess you've already met Juliana." "Nice to meet you Marcus." Lita extended her hand and he shook it. "I'll go show Lita around. I'll be back around six." Ken ushered Lita outside. "Bye." Lita called over her shoulder to Marcus and his mother. The waved back. Lita walked beside Ken, none of them speaking. Then, they spoke at the same time, "I missed you." Lita drew closer to Ken, and he put an arm around him. Her body felt cool against his. She shivered. "Are you cold?" Ken asked. "No." she lied. Ken didn't believe her and took off his jacket for her. He slipped it on her shoulders and held her tightly. They were in the middle of a small park, deserted by everyone. Ken held her against him and felt her heartbeat match his. Lita looked up at him with her bright emerald eyes that also hid shadows of trouble. Ken placed his lips softly on hers, waiting for her to respond. Lita returned the kiss and forgot all her worries. He always did that. He made her think of nothing but him. Lita drew apart, but still stayed in his arms. "What?" Ken whispered, his breath brushing against her cheeks. She was more than glamorous. She was heavenly, a goddess, the princess of his life. Something was troubling her, he could tell. Her usually clear eyes were now clouded with something mysterious. Lita didn't say anything, just looked at him. His chestnut brown eyes that matched her hair perfectly. She was trying to decide how she was attracted to two men, two different men. Galdon had pale blue eyes, like crystal. Galdon's eyes were puzzling, all his feelings usual hidden in them. Sometimes, his blue eyes even scared her. It was as if he could look into her soul, but she still like him. Loved him? Ken's brown eyes were warm and happy. She could look in and see what he was feeling, thinking. They were suppose to stay together forever, destiny. Where did Galdon fit in? Ken led her to a bench and let her sit. He sat next to her, close enough to hear her stiffle a sob. "Lita? What's wrong? You can tell me." Ken pleaded. Lita felt tired. She laid down and put her head on his lap, so she could look into her eyes and he could see into hers. "This is going to be a long story." "I have the time." Ken said softly. "Okay, here goes..." Lita told him the story, leaving out the part about her feelings for Galdon. Ken was holding Lita by the time she finished the story. She was half sobbing, half crying at the same time. "Lita, don't cry." Ken soothed. "You know I'll be here for you. I won't let anything happen to you. Don't worry, I won't let them get you." "No. Just forget about me." Lita pleaded. She didn't want him to risk her lofe for her. Especially since she still cared for Galdon. "You know I can't do that. I have to protect you." Ken said. "No. You can't it's too dangerous. They're too powerful." Lita got up, not wanting him to find out about her feelings for Galdon. Ken got up behind her and slipped her arms around her. He knew she was hiding something. He also knew that she would tell him eventually. They never kept secrets from each other. "Lita. You're not telling me something." He said softly into her ear. "I can't, not now. I'm not ready." Lita admitted. Ken let go, and walked to a rose bush. He picked a rose, and handed it to her. "You can tell me when you're ready. I'll be there for you. I love you." Lita gushed out more tears, trying to stop. Why did he have to say that? Why was love so hard? Ken wondered why she was crying so hard. Didn't she love him anymore? Why didn't she answer him with "I love you too"? "Come on, it's getting late. I'll bring you to a hotel." Ken took her hand and started walking back to the apartment. By the time they had reached the apartment, Lita had gotten control and wasn't crying anymore. She still looked sad, but forced herself to smile. The door opened, and she saw Marcus and Juliana sitting and reading. "Hi." Ken said, "I'm back." "Hello." Lita said quietly. "Juliana, do you know of any good hotels that Lita can stay in?" Ken asked. "Well," Juliana said thoughtfully, "how long is she staying?" "I guess more than a week or two." Lita answered for herself. "Then you should go to a boarding house." "What's that?" Ken asked. "It's a house with an extra room. Usually, people rent the extra room. It's not as expensive as a hotel, and it's a lot homey." Juliana explained. "There is one right down the street. Mrs. Borja lives there she is renting it out. Why don't you take the young lady there?" "Thank you. I will." Ken said, then turned to Lita, "Did you bring your things?" "I'll get them, they're in the bedroom." Lita went to fetch her beg. "Tell her to come for dinner after she settles in." Juliana whispered to Ken, "She looks like a nice girl." Lita came out with a big duffle bag, and a purse. "Let me help you with that." Ken said, and took the bag. Juliana wrote down the address and handed it to Ken, then she said goodbye to Lita, and went into the kitchen. "Bye." Lita said to Marcus. "Good-bye." Lita followed Ken to the boarding house. She trailed behind him two steps and tried to sort out her feelings. Ken was trying to figure out what was wrong with Lita. Why was she so sad all of a sudden? They reached the boarding house in less than ten minutes. Ken knocked on the door and quickly, it swung open. An old woman stood there smiling. They exchanged some words, in French so that Lita could not understand. When Lita saw Ken take out his wallet, she stopped him, "Wait. I can pay for myself." She put a hand on his arm. "No, I can." Ken said. Lita sighed, it was always this way with Ken. It wasn't that he was sexist, but he always insisted to pay for her. On dates, to the movies, even on trips. "How much?" she asked. Ken finally gave in, "Ten dollars a week." Lita took out her purse and handed the money to the old woman. She had a peek into the wallet, and saw that she only had ten more dollars left. Good thing I brought the credit card, Lita thought. Her credit card would be exchanged for more money. Ever since her parent died, her rich uncle from somewhere supported her. He sent her a credit card and said to use it for anything she needed. Not once was a bill mailed to her. The old woman let them in, showing them to the second floor of the house. There were two bathrooms, one for Lita, and the other for the old woman. Lita still didn't know her name. The woman opened a bedroom door and told her that this was where she would stay. The room wasn't small, but wasn't huge either. It was almost the same size as Lita's room back home. Ken set the bag on the bed and turned to Lita. "Like it?" "Love it." The old woman left the two of them alone. She slowly shuffeled back to the first floor. "Would you like to come for dinner?" Ken asked. "No, I couldn't" "Please? Juliana told me to invite you." "So you're not inviting me on your own? How rude." Lita joked. They both laughed together. This was the Lita that Ken knew. The Lita that was always happy and funny. He missed the old Lita. "You know what I mean." Ken said. "Yeah, but not today. I just want to get some sleep. Don't worry. I can cook for myself remember?" "Okay. See you, real soon." Ken was about to leave. "Ken?" Lita sounded desperate. "Yeah?" "No, never mind." Lita was about to tell him the whole thing, but decided not to. TO BE CONTINUED? E-mail me: Ladyjupiter@sailorjupiter.com
