Some hero he was turning out to be.

Justin looked down at cars zooming below his high rise apartment. He was high above the city, observing the daily activities of New York City.

It wasn't fair for the Society to treat him like this. He was the youngest member and all the flunky jobs went to him. Writing tickets and giving out warning to jay walkers. It was humiliating. He had joined the Society for one reason, and that was to protect the citizens of this city. So far the only thing that he had protected the average city dweller of was to keep them from stepping into doggie crap. It was Justin Freewell, that personally picked up every piece of crap in the streets. Giving a tiered sigh, he turned away from the floor to ceiling window and walked into the living room, which was a major disaster area. He ignored the green and fuzzy thing that was peeking out from underneath the smelly socks and unwashed shirts.

Someone really should clean up this mess. Maybe he could call his friend's girlfriend Susie, she was a clean freak and he was sure she wouldn't mind tidying up his apartment a little.

Flopping down on the couch Justin tried to find the remote for the t.v. underneath the pile of newspapers and pizza boxes.

“Where the hell is it? I know I threw it here yesterday.” He dug his hand between the cushions of the old, rundown couch. His fingers skimmed over cookie crumbs and a fortune in loose change. “Ahh, come to papa.” His fingers curled around something solid.

“What the hell is this?” Justin curiously looked at the game boy.

Turning it over, he examined the black object. This wasn't a game boy it was a standard Society communicator. It was about the size of a cell phone, except a little thicker. It fit nicely into the palm of his hand.

“Okay, lets see what we got here.” It was really sad that he talked to himself. He needed to get a pet, maybe a dog named Sparky. “Yeah, that's a great idea. Then within a week I’d have to the park and bury the dead body.” He knew himself well enough to know that he would forget to feed the animal.

Bringing his attention back to the communicator, Justin turned it on.

“This message is for Justin Freewell” A halting, mechanical voice floated from the black box. The screen fuzzed a bit and made some noise, then a hazy 3-D image of a person was projected. These things always reminded him of the Jetsons t.v.

“Who are you?” He knew she couldn't answer, this was a previously recorded message.

“Hi, my name is Mina. You might be wondering how this got into your room and what I want from you. I apologize but I can't tell you anything right now.” She laughed nervously. “I need to see you. Please come to St. John's Pier, tonight at seven.”

She reached forward, as though to turn off the recorder then stopped. “Your place is a pig sty, you really should clean it up. I had to wear a gas mask and radioactive suite just to walk in your living room.” Again she laughed, then disappeared.

“That was interesting.” What could she want, and above all how did she know him?

Justin glanced at his watch. He had ten minutes to reach the pier.

Justin switched off the engine of his motorcycle. It was so quiet. The only thing audible was the gentle splash of the water. There was nobody here.

He remained seated and scanned the pier. Nothing.

“Oh this is great. I can't believe she stood me up and this wasn't even our second date.” Shaking his head at his own stupidity, Justin zipped up his jacket. This was a lousy night to be outside. It was cold and the wind was strong enough to knock a building over.

“I can't believe you showed. I was hoping you would come but I wasn't sure.” The excited rush of words came out of no where. “Don't fall off your bike handsome, you might break something.”

Mina studied the tense back of her only hope. She needed his help and now that he was here she was going to do anything possible to get him to help her, even if it meant bashing his head and kidnapping him.

“Are you going to stand behind me all night?” He glanced over his shoulder and lifted an eyebrow in question.

“No, I'm not.” She gave him a smile and came around to face him. “I need your help.”

“Really. And what is it that you want me to do?” He draped his hands over the handles of the bike.

“I want you to find a person for me. I think she's been kidnapped and being held hostage.”

“Why don't you call a detective? Kidnappings are their type of crime”

“I did, but he refused to help me. He though I was crazy.”

“Who is your friend and who is the kidnapping party?”

She tipped her head back and looked up at the star sprinkled sky. “Her name Ami Anderson. And I think she was abducted by aliens.”

“Are you insane?” Justin laughed until there were tiers in his eyes. His stomach ached from laughing so hard. “Did you just escape from the mental institution? Aliens? You've got tot be kidding me.”

“I am absolutely serious, Mr. Freewell.”

She was giving him a hard look. Her eyes were narrowed and her mouth was a thin line. She was serious. But he couldn't help himself from laughing even harder. What a loon.

“Ami is my friend and not to mention the top pediatric surgeon in the country.”

“I know who Miss Anderson is. But aliens?”

“Stop laughing you poor excuse for a . . . a . . .”

“Lady you're too much. You should be a science fiction writer or maybe go into stand up.” She looked ready to blow. Her face was turning red and a tick had developed in her temple. Her high heeled shoe kept tapping on the pavement.

She had nice legs, too bad she was insane.

“Look, Mina, why don't you go home and have a nice cup of herbal tea. I’ll call you a doctor and you can have a nice talk with him, okay?”

Mina crossed her arms and glared at him. He was using that patronizing voice, the one parents used on stubborn little kids.

This was enough, he was going to be the last person to laugh at her theory. Taking a deep breath Mina prepared to take control. Quietly sliding closer to him, she planted both of her palms on his shoulders and shoved with all her might. Justin grunted as he fell backwards off his bike. “Listen up, pretty boy. I have a missing friend and you are my only hope. You are going to help me.”

She was standing over him and still taping that foot of hers. He was flat on his back, with surely a broken back and she was tapping her blasted foot. That tapping was giving him a headache. He clenched his jaw and decided to dump her into the river. His eyes traveled up her legs and he changed his mind about moving. It wasn't so bad down here. He had a nice view of her legs. Let her rant and rave for a while this could be good therapy for her, and he can just relax and enjoy the sight before him.

He relaxed and tuned out her pesky voice. She was wearing a black, no nonsense business skirt and a white blouse. It looked so professional and businesslike. I guess they hire all types of kooky these days.

“Are you all right?” Mina looked down at the man at her feet. While she had been going over the proof that she had, she hadn't noticed that he hadn't moved in the last seven minutes. “Oh, my God he's unconscious”

She knelt down beside him and squinted down at his shadowed face. Gently she picked up his head. Were his eyes open? “Justin I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. Can you hear me?”

“Yeah, I can hear you. Quite yelling in my face.”

“Well then.” She dropped his head and stood. “Will you help me?”

His head connected with the hard pavement. Multicolored stars and bunnies zinged before his eyes. Justin blinked rapidly, trying to clear his vision. Sitting up he rubbed his head. Finding a lump in the back of his head, Justin winced. “Can I have a day or two to think about it?”

“I guess I can give you a day.”

He was still siting on the cold pavement. Mina thought of herself as a considerate and kind person, and being such a person prompted her to extend a helping hand.

Justin took her hand and let her help him stand. “So why did you pick me and how did you know where to find me?” Mina stared down at their joined hands. “Ami once mentioned you to me. She said you had a brain, although I think she was wrong about that part of her diagnosis, and that you had courage.”

“Compliments like that won't convince me to help you, precious.”

“Sorry, I couldn't help myself.” She looked up at him. “As to finding you, it wasn't so hard. I asked around and I knew you joined the Society, there aren't many people who fit your description.”

“You're referring to my good looks and charming wit. Yes it's true there aren't many more like me around.”

Mina rolled her eyes and prayed for patience. “You don't really believe that garbage, do you?”

“What do you mean, garbage?” His eyes narrowed and the hold on her hand tightened. He was forcing her to move backwards toward the edge of the pier.

“Ah, what are you doing?” Mina’s eyes widened, as she tried to tug her hand away from him. He was really steamed, maybe she shouldn't have insulted him like that. “Okay, I’ll say it.”

He stopped pushing her backward. “Say what?” He studied her with suspicious greenish gray eyes.

“You . . . you . . .” Did she have it in her to lie to his face? She took a deep breath and looked over her shoulder. Dear God she was on the edge. It wouldn't take much to send her flying into the dark, cold water. With that in mind, she decided that she did have the ability to lie to him. “You are the most handsome man I have ever seen.” Mina said in a rush.

With his left hand he rubbed his chin and considered her words. “You really think so?”

“Yes, yes, yes. Definitely the most handsome.” She swallowed and peeked at the water again. Please, oh please let him believe that load of crap.

“What else makes me so outstanding?”

“What?” She couldn't believe this. She was scared stiff that she was about to tumble into the freezing St. John river and he wanted her to inflate his ego. “Are you sure you can take much more of these compliments? I think your head is big enough and a little more and you might float away.”

That was a mistake.

“You know I'm going to push you into that river, don't you?” He was mad again.

“Yes.” Mina whispered. “But please reconsider. You're supposed to protect people not hurt them.”

“I know that but you are not a real human, you see. You are a fungus, who unfortunately has the ability to speak. Enjoy your swim.” He smiled happily and pushed.

That should have sent her into the river, but things did not work out like Justin had planed. She was smarter and quicker then she seemed. She managed to turn sideways and his hands pushed at empty air.

Mina watched him grab at the air and considered helping. He was on the edge and one feather light push would sent him into the water. If she waited too long he would regain his balance.

Oh, she hated arrogant males. Smiling wide with delight Mina lightly tapped him on the shoulder with a finger tip. “Enjoy your dip.”

“Oh, hell.”

Those were his last words as he went tumbling down. His body slammed into the water with a giant belly flop. Ouch, that's got to hurt. All that hot air inside his head didn't keep him afloat for long.

"This is exactly what you deserve, for bullying me into lying like that. You should be ashamed of your self." Mina yelled as she patiently waited for him to resurface.

It didn't take him long to pop out of the black river and yell threats against life. "I'm going to kill you. I don't care if I'm sworn to protect the innocent. They can lock me away for years and won't care, as long as I know your dead."

"Ow, Justin, you wound me so." Mina couldn't keep the sad expression on her face and burst out laughing. "You should see yourself. You look like a drowned rat."

Justin swam faster for the pier. I'm going to kill her and dump her body in the river, No one will ever know, his mind reasoned. His teeth began to chatter and his body shivered.

"Hurry up, would you. I can't stand here all night waiting for you to climb up that ladder. It's cold." Mina tried to bring the circulation back into her frozen toes by stomping her feet. She rubbed her hand up and down her arms, desperately trying not to freeze.

"If you think it's cold up there, you should feel the temperature down here." His angry voice floated up from beneath the wooden boards of the pier.

The sound of his chattering teeth made her stomach twist with guilt. "I'm sorry I pushed you in, but you were going to push me. I had to protect myself."

His head peeked over the edge of the pier, then his shoulders heaved over the side and he landed face down on the wooden boards. He was breathing hard and shaking all over. Justin flopped onto his back and looked up at here. "Just because I can't move right now doesn't mean I won't kill you."

Mina kneeled next to him and studied his face. "You don't look too bad. I think you can make it home with out my help." Mina stood and began to walk away.

"Wait." He grabbed her ankle with his incredibly cold hand. "How did Ami know about me?" A thought sprung in his head. With a smile he tugged on her ankle and sent her falling to the ground. "This will have to do for now. But remember I still have a plan to kill you."

"You know, I didn't think it was possible to dislike a person as much as I dislike you. You are a pig and you live like one . . ."

"Save your compliments for some other time, I'm not in the mood to be flattered. Tell me how Ami knew about me."

"You guys went to the same university. She had philosophy with you."

"Oh, now I remember. She was the quiet one who always had all the answers. I always sat next to her on test days." Justin smiled up at the full moon in memory.

"I bet you did. I doesn't surprise me that you cheated in college." Mina shock her head sadly. What had made Ami say that he was intelligent?

"Who said I cheated off of her. I prefer to think of it as comparing answers with and intellectual equal."

"Whatever." She rolled her eyes and kicked away his hand. "I really have to go."

"Yeah, see you around."

She stopped walking and looked back at him. "Does this mean you're going to help me?" Her blue eyes lit up with hope and she held her breath.

"I guess so. Ami was a nice girl and I'll help you find her."

"Good." Mina did a little jump and clapped her hands.

Justin watched her run to her red little car. What a kooky lady, but she did have a nice pair of legs.

He closed his eyes and prepared to stand, when he felt the ground shake. "What was that?" Justin opened his eyes. Everything seemed normal. Sitting up, he looked over his shoulder. "Holy weather spoons. What is that?"

He jumped to his feet. "Mina is that you?" He squinted and searched the shadows. A figure of a woman was standing hidden in the alley. Her hair moved around as though it were alive, red eyes gleamed in the dark and long nails were curled into claws.

"Justin." She whispered in a hushed voice. "Come."

"Who are you?" Justin didn't move.

"Come, Justin." She was calling him in a sweet, gentle voice.

"I don't think so lady."

"COME." She shrieked, spreading her arms wide.

"That's some breath." Justin mumbled as a blast of frigid air knocked him down. Tentacles of hair were wrapping around his lags and he was being pulled toward the woman.

Justin clawed at the ground until he managed to grab hold of a board. Holding on by the fingertips, he tried to keep away from the creature. But his puny efforts were no match for her greater strength. He lost his hold on the board and once again was being dragged toward the creature.

"Venus Crescent Beam Smash." A blazing yellow light cut the tentacles encircling his legs. Not wasting any time on searching for the source of the light, Justin scrambled to his feet.

"Now what?" He couldn't get to his bike because mutant woman was in that direction. The only thing left to do was to go back into the water. "Great. I haven't taken this many baths since I was a baby." He ran straight and dived into the river.
