The Bus's Transit of Anime Realities

Super Atragon

Review

Definately an anime out to be a tale of epic proportions which actually makes it pretty easy to make fun of. By no mean is this a bad mini series despite a character with the name Go may confuse you at some points, but its something so good that you want to make few wise cracks out of respect to it, especially with the name our hero. There is no way each tape in the series should cost $30 a piece, but it is one that is definately worth seeing. I also think A.D.V. Films may have played a part in why I bought this by showing a preview for it on every other Neon Genesis Evangelion tape kinda like brain washing.

Review for Super Atragon

Episode 1 | Episode 2

Episode 1: Zero Hour to Extinction

Episode 2

Is is an early spring for the Southern Hemisphere, or is their the possibility something is melting the South Pole? To find the answer the U.N. sends an exhibition to find out what is melting the ice cap which they believe is a giant column that is producing microwaves. Two of the members the team, Go Arisaka and Annete Sukara, take a helicopter in for visual confirmation when Annete suddenly panic as an attack is comensed upon them. The other members of the exhibition have been killed in the attack and the U.N. decides to counter attack with two nuclear missiles which only gets rid of the clouds that were blocking the column way. Now giant ring are attacking the U.N. fleet by crushing them in their center and bending energy beams. Go and Annete are seperated and the next thing Go sees is that he inside a ship that is inside an ice berg. Is this ship the way to defeat this new enemy and is Annete even alive after the first attack?

This anime does live up to all the attention given to it; the soundtrack is magnificent, the story is great combinig history modern sci-fi, and the animation is great. Of course Avatar could have been drawn a little better, with every preview I saw I thought she was a guy. Still it does seem to try pushing everything really far which makes it so much fun to give it a little MST3K treatment. If your not interested in sci-fi that isn't using lasers and huge fantastic explosion, basicly total concentration on action you may not be interested. This does actually cause a problem with the episode because it does try to cater to those people. Just think about the plot, WWII, unknown, invincible enemy, unusual technology, high body count, for war nuts or RPG fans (we all couldn't wait till they discussed the Third Reich in U.S. History, I'm an American if you feel left out on that generalization, well who can resist games like Final Fantasy) its something you have to see. And if you like MST3K, you might not be able to resist it.

Episode 2

Episode 1 | Episode 2

The U.N. Forces seem to be trying in vain to stop another one of the cylinders from going into space which will connect with the other to form a microwave ring to cook the Earth, but the Ra appears and starts turning the tide in the battle. Unfortunately the Ra can't even destroy the cylinders. Fortunately they do know that their is a radio signal that is transmitted to each cylinder to direct it so if they could lure the roaming source to them they should be able to stop the apocolypse. As they are waiting for the attack and as Annete prepare to face Avitar, Go is told the truth about his grandfather, father, the Ra, Annete, and her rival Avitar who represent a subterainian race that wants to destroy the violent humans. So now the Ra has to deal with Avitar and the U.N. who refuses to allow the Ra to fight independently and will stop it unless it joins the fleet.

I don't know if my plot summary make the episode sound elaborate or simple, but by the end it, its one of the best climax to a series ever. Some of the Go Annete relationship is over done (you may want to have a trash can nearby with the under water scene, but its still done better than any of the physical romance in Titanic (If you want to see James Cameron's best film its The Terminator). The action sequences are well done with even some HK cinema elements tossed in and the rivalry between Avitar and Annete is almost as good as Guld and Isamu in Macross Plus. The series will be in a single video soon some of you have to see it to give this series the respect it deserve.
