The Bus's Transit of Anime Realities

Review | Webring

Macross Plus Midi-Voices originally from The Anime Auditorium

If there are any anime titles you are guaranteed to find if you are renting videos, its Robotech: The Macross Saga, and thanks to Ted Turner, long live the cable TV conquerer, you get a chance to catch it every day on Cartoon Network probably till he gets the rights to something like Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball Z. Despite tacky at some points, the series still develops great characters which is a main draw to this movie. If you liked Robotech, you'll love this especially since there is no Lynn Min Mai. I did see the first volume of the Macross Plus series, but unfortunately it was supposed to be dubbed but it wasn't and it didn't even have subtitles. I was glad that I could follow along to some extent from subtitled animes I owned, but it just wasn't enough. To make sure I'd see the series without this problem I chose just to buy the movie which is worth it.

The year is 2040, 30 years after the Macross was able to lead in the defeat of Zentradi invaders. The human race has been able to advance so far after the destruction of the Earth to colonize new planets and Eden just happens to be one. Here they defense force is testing two new Valkyres to add to the air force. This gives us two test pilots Guld, a Zentradi and YF-21 pilot, and Isamu, a hot shot and YF-19 pilot. The two were good friends in high school as kids until something ended the friendship involving their girl friend Myung. The two instantly go at each others throats, and to add more fuel to the fire, Myung has returned to Eden to promote her virtual rock star, Sharon Apple. There is something very mysterious about Sharon, no one knows what is the artificial iteligence behind it and why would Myung give up her seeking dreams to produce her. Now both pilots are out to win her back a long with proving their fighter is the greater at what ever cost for both goals.

What away to continue the Macross Saga. The story is extremely involving, the animation is the best in any anime film (I am still more of a fan for Evangelion's, but this maybe the best in all anime since this is the four episode Macross Plus series rolled in to one), the CGI is the best in the all traditional animation being Japanese or American, and the soundtrack is the best is all anime. I enjoyed it more than Akira, but I do admit the story isn't as good as Akira's. Despite its serious tone, it keeps everything that Robotech was about in it and that includes the characters (Isamu is a lot like Rick Hunter, Myung is a lot like Min Mei, and Lucy is a lot like Lisa Hayes but I may be stretching it with that statement. Just the simple fact that it isn't dependent on battles makes it something any Robotech fan should try and see. This is my favorite anime film atleast till I get Macross 2 or someone finally releases the Neon Genesis Evangelion films.
