Photos
of Overnight Trips from Iwakuni
TOKYO TRIP:
- Ashley and John at Tokyo Disneyland
On our first full day in Tokyo, we visited Tokyo Disneyland. It really
was very nice; possibly because it's a lot newer than either Disneyland
in CA or Disney World in FL. Anyway, it seemed more lavish, and cleaner,
if that's possible. But, if you go... take plenty of yen, because your
charge cards are not accepted here! (How VERY un-American!) (May '97)
- View from the Tokyo Tower
We went to the Tokyo Tower, on our second day in Tokyo. It is 333 meters
high (the Eiffel Tower is 320m). This photo was taken from the main
observation deck, which is only 150 meters high! It was a cloudy day, so
we couldn't make out Mt. Fuji, but you could see quite a bit of the city.
We also went up to the special observation deck, at 250 meters above the
city! Quite a view! In fact, we saw the Tokyo Diet building, which is the
seat of the national government in Japan. Within the Tower are several
museums, which you can visit for an extra fee. (May '97)
- Inside a Buddhist Temple
On our third day in Tokyo, we rode the subway to Ueno Imperial Park, and
spent the day there. This is the inside of a temple in the park. (May '97)
- Gojo Tenjin Shinto Shrine
This shrine is dedicated to the gods of medicine and learning. It is also
located in Ueno Imperial Park. (May '97)
- Ashley and John at Ueno Zoo
We spent most of the day at the zoo, also located within the Imperial Park.
It's a fairly large zoo. Some of the animals have pretty nice habitats,
especially the great apes. But animal rights apparently isn't a big issue
here, and many of the habitats, notably the elephants and American bison,
were rather dismal. (May '97)
- Modern Tokyo buildings and a stone lantern
Japan is a land of contrasts, but it seemed even more evident in Tokyo.
This is a view of the modern office buildings of Tokyo, across a reed-filled
pond from Benten Hall in Ueno Imperial Park. An old stone lantern is
silhouetted in the foreground. (May '97)
KOBE/OSAKA TRIP:
- Port of Kobe Tower
A popular symbol of the city, in Meriken Park, on the City Loop bus route. (Oct.'97)
- City Loop Trolley-bus
This is the bus we rode to tour the city, parked under the Kobe Tower. The route is 13km, with 16 stops- we got all-day tickets, which allow you to get off and on as many times as you'd like. (Oct.'97)
- Motion machine in shopping mall (Seiden?), Harborland, Kobe
I wanted to take Paul's picture with this contraption, because it's similar to (if not exactly the same as) one in a shopping mall in Plattsburgh, NY, where he's from! Balls, clangs, gears, the whole bit! (Oct.'97)
- Kobe Tower and Museum
When we ate lunch at the Sizzler :-) in the Mosaic shopping center in Harborland, the view across the water was the stuff of postcards!!! The white structure is the Kobe Maritime Museum. The frame roof structure is supposed to be suggestive of a sailboat and waves.(Oct.'97)
A Day at Tokyo Disneyland 3/16/98 This is a photo bonanza, by an American couple who visited Tokyo Disneyland in 1997! They got many more (and much better) photos than I did, so if you want to take a peek at Tokyo Disneyland, this would be the "site to see"!
