These two traditional homes are located in the Monzen lotus field area. The lotus farmers here are apparently quite wealthy, and have some very lovely homes. | |
The roof detail shown to the left is a traditional method of decorating the homes. Called Oni-gawara, they are protective in the same way that gargoyles are, to drive away evil. Oni is a kind of goblin, and gawara is derived from the word for roof tile, kawara. Thank you to Akio Inuzuka for this information!
