Dear Master of this site I am immediately impressed by your simplicity and sense of design. I only wish that I could keep things so clean and neat. I am actually surfing Tokyo for the first time and looking for a background for a page I want to do called the Dojo. I am really int rested in Asian Culture but know very little about it. Now that I have access to the information freeway I am trying to learn as much as possible. Anyway the site is great.. I will be back

"The essence of the Qin is restraint. It was created in ancient times to help man purify himself and lead a gentle and sober life, to quell all wayward passions and to curb every riotous impulse. If you wish to play, then you must first seek out a quiet chambe,r a studio with distant view, or upper room; or some secluded nook 'mong rocks and trees, on craggy mountain-top, by water's edge Let the weather be clear and calm, a gentle breeze, a moonlit night. Light some incense, and sit in silent meditation. Empty the mind of outward thoughts. Poise Breath and Blood in Perfect Harmony. Your Soul may now commune with the Divine, and enter into that mysterious Union with the Way. As the ancients said, true music-lovers have always been few. If there is no one able to share your music's true delight, then sit alone, and serenade the breeze and moonlight, hymn the ancient pines and weather-worn rocks; let wild monkeys and venerable cranes hear your song, rather than the vulgar mob, whose dull ears would only sully the precious virtue of the Qin. One of my favorite quote from: The Story of the Stone by Goa Xue Qin

Here's my answer to Paul's question.
Chinese Emperors had always guarded their leadership position jealously, often taking tough actions against any opposition forces. In this sense, violence had often been a part of the culture of leadership in China's history.
About the Hong Kong Triads, I am not sure about the present Chinese Government, but personally I am not surprised if the Triads see themselves as some protectors of Chinese order against the West. Historically, some organised groups in Qing Dynasty did sa otage factories, churches and other facilities installed by the 'Westerners' in the name of upholding the country's pride and dignity against Western influences. Even today, some drug traffickers even claimed that they are paddling drugs to the West becau e they want to take revenge from them for introducing Opium into China in the Qing Dynasty. Granted, it may be true that these groups started out as self-help groups that only wanted to 'good' or 'right'. But no matter what they say, the social problem po ed by triads nowadays cannot be denied.

Again about triads, how far do you feel that violence is an intrinsic part of chinese culture in this respect, when governments are known to take tough stances against violence of any sort?
What now do you make of the Chinese Government's implicit approval of the Hong Kong triads, by their promise that the status quo will remain intact? Are the triads well protected and seen as protectors of the chinese order against western colonial imperia ism, in spite of the brutality of this sort of order?
