Feb 28,
2002 Well, winter's almost over now - actually it feels like it never really began. Its been so mild over here, it feels like Vancouver. The real pisser is that I bought new snow tyres this year!! |
Not much is new for me. As I mentioned, I did go away for 2 weekends in February to the hp cabins north of Kingston. They had some snow, so we were able to do some backcountry skiing (though we did it without packs). The first trip was with Lynne, her brother Wilson and his girlfriend Bonnie. The second was with Lynne, Andrew and Nancy.
Valentine's day was real nice. Lynne took me to the Auberge du Pommier on Yonge. The paté de foie (goose liver - i believe) was amazing and it the wine was awesome (a 2000 Sancerre). I dare say it is now my favorite restaurant. Although it is expensive (at least as expensive as Canoe), I found the food better and the location much more convenient.
This month, however, the family is preparing for Wesley's ordination, which is on March 17th. I'll probably be an usher, but other than that and a gift, there really isn't much preparation for me. That's good because I will be in Phoenix the week before. I still cannot believe sometimes that he's the same guy that used to teach me sunday school.
I've also begun preparing for my next set of trips. This year, Lynne and I are planning to go to Banff for a week, where we'll hook up with my brother for some backpacking and climbing. There's also plans in the works to go to Australia with my brother for some backpacking in the outback!! There will also be the usual trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire - I'm looking at backpacking the Great Gulf Rim - and a possible canoe trip in August. Finally, small weekend backpacking trips are also being planned.
Obviously, I spend a great deal of time following the events of the war.
January 7th, 2002 - Its hard to believe that I've been in Toronto for almost 5 years now - I remember moving here like it was yesterday. I'm a true Torontonian now, enjoying its multi-culturalness (especially the excellent food), the pace (business and lifestyle), and the yuppie-ness of the lifestyle. I now live in Scarborough, right on the border of Markham. I drive my silver RAV4 to Mississauga every day to work.
I'm still at HP, though doing different things than when I started (though with the same title). This has truly been a blessing, especially with this current business environment and knowing how some of my fellow MBAers have changed jobs quite a bit. I'm currently doing project management (almost 2 years now), though marketing is still my official title. To tell the truth, I'm missing some of my marketing and hope to start doing more of it this year.
I would love to say I have some big life-changing announcement, but I really don't. In case you didn't know, I broke up with my previous girlfriend, Michelle, over 2.5 years ago. I'd like to say it was a mutual thing, that we drifted apart, but it wasn't - I was just tired with the travelling (she's in Montreal) and the cultural differences (she's from China). I've since met a wonderful girl at church, Lynne, who is a nurse at Scarborough Grace hospital. Funny enough, she is the sister in law of my old sunday school teacher from Montreal, Wesley.
Speaking of church, I'm now worshipping at the Toronto Chinese Community Church, where I'm fairly active. Its a non-denominational evangelical Christian church, with a strong emphasis on missions and community outreach. Yes, I am an evangelical Christian.
What else have I been doing? I've been pretty active in the outdoors, especially since my brother Ron moved to Calgary in 97. My current passion is rock climbing and backpacking. For those of you that know a thing or two about climbing, I currently lead on 5.10a's and TR up to 5.10c - I've yet to try any trad, though I have received some gear for Christmas a year ago. I'm hoping to improve and be a 5.11 climber by summer. In the past couple of years, I've been climbing in and around Banff, BC and locally at the Escarpment. I've done some backpacking in the same areas, as well as Mt. Washington NH, Mt. Mansfield VT, 2 of the Fourteeners in Colorado, and the Superstition Wilderness in Arizona. I've also done some skiing out west. This winter, I'm also hoping to start ice climbing and cross-country skiing.
In town, I also do indoor climbing, run (my 5k is down to 24 minutes), work out at the gym, play badminton and volleyball - though the latter two has given up in frequency to the first three. Lynne also does all the same things as me, outdoors (I taught her to climb this past summer) and in town. Other hobbies include travelling (which i do at least once or twice a year, hence all my backpacking/climbing trips around North America), watching movies, eating, and keeping up with international affairs. I'm still a 49ers fan (they haven't had a record like this in years!!), a Republican (small government, big business, big military, conservative, etc...), and love military and geopolitical affairs (I subscribe to Foreign Affairs, Jane's Intel Review and Foreign Report). I'm also online all the time for work, so if anyone is on yahoo or hotmail (see my e-mail addresses in my About Mike section ), you can often get me on Messenger (IM or MSN resp.) 9 to 5.
My family is well - Ron is now in Calgary as I mentioned earlier, and an active member of the small climbing community there. He works for CP rail. Karen graduated from a degree in Sports Therapy and is working in a clinic in Montreal. She still lives with mom and dad. Robert is in his second year Marianopolis. My cousin Cindy was married last year in September. And I still hang around Andrew (we're inseperable), who's getting married in May to Nancy, a girl we met at church here.
