This is not at all enlightening, but I really wanted to give my $0.02 for what it's worth.
As is obvious from the title, this concerns the North American CCS dub that has had the CML, CCSML and even the CFFML buzzing worse than hornets in honey for the past week or so. Now, I live in Singapore, half across the world from most of my online friends, so you might be wondering at the fact that I even *have* something to say about it. I say having my inbox clogged up with 900+ mails from various lists and distraught NA friends gives me enough reason to stand up on the soapbox and let loose. >_<
I downloaded clips of the first two dub episodes from Nelvana's website, and...well. Crappy pronunciation, crappy names, crappy editing and overall changes. Pretty much what the majority of dubs are like, if the ones I've seen on AXN here are anything to go by. I've already puked and poked fun at 'Li Showron' and 'Clau' enough to bore my cat. But what *were* you all expecting? Everyone already feared the worst even before the thing came out. It was no surprise, really, and I think most fans of the original CCS have already moaned, groaned, turned off their TV sets and settled themselves to wait for Pioneer's uncut DVD subbed release. That's smart.
What's not smart is repeatedly ranting and wailing about something that can't be changed by people who aren't Nelvana's target audience. Big companies are stone deaf to public trauma. I understand a lot of folks are terribly upset by how CCS has been mauled and need to let off steam, but frankly, it's getting tiring. I'm starting to dread opening my inbox to wade through piles of mail to the effect of 'I hate the dub! Waa!' and then ploughing through numerous rebukes and/or pacifications from others. What made it even worse was that someway down the line, the topic of the dub morphed into a religious discussion about homosexuality/incest on the CML, and Sailormoon of all things was also dragged out and whined over on the former and the CCSML. Not to mention that the CFFML was also disturbed by dub complaints for some time.
I guess I'm just trying to appeal to everyone not to post mails merely groaning about how bad the dub is, that it sucks, blah. It's all been said before. Reasons for the dub's less-than-perfect state have also already been stated, pondered over and countered repeatedly in the past few days. If you *must* whine, try to whine in a more interesting way, like writing a spamfic, or _something_. And if we could get off the topic of Cartoon Network or whatever company making Haruka and Michiru cousins and Michiru's first kiss with a guy called Brad sucking big time, I'd be more than grateful. Hello~? One, two, or even three OT posts are fine now and then. Turn it into a whole series of one-liners, and it's not funny.
I never expected to be involved in this dub-bashing thing, but there ya go. I pray now that any dubbies coming to my page will be possessed of some intelligence and not flame me for writing Touya-Yuki fics or 'making' Syaoran have a crush on Yukito, etc. -_- Thankfully, so far I've only received a couple of 'hey, why did you write like that?' mails civil enough to warrant explanations and pointing out to Meg's newbie site.
I only hope that the dubbies and the 'originalies' ^^; will continue to be polite, open and patiently forgiving with one another. And of course, stay on-topic as much as possible. One thing's more than likely though: CCS will never become a second Sailormoon where dub and original are mostly in harmony. I mean, you won't be getting fanfics starring 'Sakura Avalon and Li Showron' anytime soon, God willing. *_* I don't think my heart could take it.
And this is where I shut up. Remember, love makes the world go round and all that jazz!
Sincerely,
