Mr.
Lim, a Malaysian citizen, began his studies in the U.S. in 1986.
He entered the prestigious Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens
College, City University of New York, where he earned his Bachelor
of Music (with Honors) and Master of Arts degrees in Piano Performance.
Mr.
Lim studied piano with such extraordinary musicians as Donald
Pirone, Morey Ritt and Gerald Robbins. As an active chamber musician,
he benefited from the coaching of Arbie Orenstien, Carl Schachter,
Ruth Waterman, Stephen Kates, Lawrence Glickman as well as the
Lyric Piano Quartet, where Glenn Dictorew (Concertmaster of New
York Philharmonic Orchestra) serves as violinist.

During
his 11-year stay in New York City, he performed in the Metropolitan
area extensively and appeared both as a chamber musician and a
soloist in such venues as LeFrak Concert Hall and Steinway Hall.
His programs included solo, two-piano, piano 4-hands, voice and
piano, and other chamber combinations. Mr. Lim also has a long-standing
relationship with contemporary American composer, Charles Griffin.
Mr. Lim has premiered many of Griffins works, including
his Three Pieces for Piano, written for him in 1990, a work that
Mr. Lim has retained in his standard repertoire for solo concerts.
Besides
frequent performances, Mr. Lim is also a dedicated music educator.
His students have won numerous piano competitions, performing
in venues like Steinway Hall and Carnegie Recital Hall. Furthermore,
his students have been accepted into the highly competitive Pre-College
division of Manhattan School of Music. In 1999, solo and duo students
of his were chosen to perform in the Annual High Scorers
Concert at Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, sponsored by the
Associate Board of the Royal School of Music from London. |
He has been a recipient of several awards, including the Karol
Rathaus Memorial Award, the Rathaus Family Award and the first
Malaysian to receive the Presser Scholarship. He is a member of
the Golden Key National Honor Society and the National Music Honor
Society from United States. Mr. Lim was appointed the New York
regional director of the Chiang Wen Yeh International Piano Competition
featuring Chinese Music, where he also acted as a member of the
juridical team.
Besides
performances in the United States, Mr. Lim has performed in Malaysia
and Singapore, in venues like DBS and the YMS auditoriums. Being
an active piano instructor in Singapore, he has given piano workshops
and master classes in his home studio and in schools. He gives
lessons for all levels and his students range from elementary
(Grade 1-8) to advance (Diploma for Teaching and Performing)
levels.
