A historical synopsis to 1759
The name Griffen (lat. Grivina) was first mentioned in history during 822 a.D.(Carolingian time periode) Later, the precise time is unknown, Griffen was acquired by the Bamberg Diocese. It is assumed that the Griffen Fortress was built around that time periode (between 1124 and 1146) The Fortress provided the population with shelter and protection especially during the wars with the Turks. During 1520 the Fortress and most of its eroding walls were rebuilt. Since the end of the 18th century the Fortress was left to erode to its present stage, with only ruins left.
Under Bishop Ekberg of Bamberg, the Griffen monastery was built in 1236. Today it is known as the Griffen Monastery (formerly Praemonstratenser Monastery). Around that periode in history, Griffen became a Market-Community. On June 15, 1759, the Market-Community of Griffen proclaimed independence from the Bamberg Regime, at which time all properties and estates were acquired by the Habsburgs.
