Travel Notes: The time in Guyana is one hour later than Eastern Standard Time; daylight-saving time is not observed. Visas are not required for Americans. Travelers need a valid passport and a return ticket or proof of sufficient funds for onward passage. Yellow fever immunization is required of travelers comming from most African and Latin American countries, and inoculation against typhoid, hepatitis, and malaria is recommended for travel lasting more than a day or two to remote area in Guyana.
Climate and Clothing: Summer clothing, including tieless guayaberas and shirt jacs for men, is worn year round in Georgetown. A light raincoat or umbrella is recommended, as heavy tropical rain showers can occur almost anytime of year.
Currency: The exchange rate is approximately 170 Guyanese dollars to 1 American dollar.
Transportation : Two-lane paved roads connect
Georgetown with Corriverton to the east and Linden to the South, and connect
the west bank of the Demerara with the east bank of the Essequibo River.
In all there are 550 kilometers of paved roads, 5,000kms, of gravel or
laterite, and 1,525kms. of earth roads. Traffic moves on the left. Small
inexpensive mini buses are the principal means of transport for most Guyanese.
Taxi service is usually available.
