He started to play in an army band at 15, despite not being old enough. This was because he did not know about music colleges, however it was appropriate training.
He first played on a single Alexander Bb horn, after leaving that band, and later acquired an Alexander Bb/F alto after a few years, although he preferred playing on his singles.
He starred on a Beatles album, called "Revolver".
He was principal horn of many orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic.
In 1964, he married Shirley Hopkins, a distinguished horn and Wagner tuba player.
He was awarded an OBE in 1985.
He died on March 19, 1989.
As well as being a brilliant horn player, he was also known as "The entertainer", as he was the guest comedian in his local night club.
