Kids and Physical Activity

The average six to eleven year old watches twenty three hours of television in a week--true or false?

The answer is true! Children spend more time watching television, using computers and video games than they do being physically active. This inactivity may be the reason for the increase in childhood obesity.

Children whose parents are active also tend to be more active, so the first step is to get the family moving. Walk, bike or roller blade together--set aside time to do something you enjoy. Parents can also work with schools to make sure physical education classes offer activities kids enjoy. After school activities are another way to increase physical activity.

Physical activity helps kids in several ways: it increases self-esteem, increases energy levels, improves motor coordination, and teaches life long habits for healthy living. So in the coolness of fall, work together as a family to increase physical activity.
