August 24 - London

O.K. so the flight went well. Unfortunately the movie on the flight was pretty good, so I watched it instead of sleeping. We arrived at Heathrow at just before 8:00 AM, and since we couldn't check into the hotel 'til afternoon, we decided to start our day.
In the morning Kathy, Nancy, Barbara and I went for a walk. Nancy and Barbara are carefully waiting for the cross light, and looking both ways, repeatedly, before crossing the street. This is because Kathy and I almost got run over by a small van at the previous intersection. Kensington Gardens is close to the hotel so we decided to go there to spend the nice sunny day outside.
The picture to the left is a big weeping beech tree which has been pruned to make picturesque shade over this walkway. It's kind of a gateway to the beautiful flowered walkway in the right picture below. Walking here is like a living Burpee catalogue. Everything has been planned to be at complimentary heights with lots of color all season long. (O.K. I only saw it one day, but it's hard to believe that it would be this wonderful for only one day.) On the left is a close up of some kind of flowering tree/bush that caught my eye.
There's also this sunken garden, but apparently it's too nice to open to everyone. Actually, I'm guessing that it's closed not only 'cuz of the wear and tear on the grass but 'cuz it would get too crowded for people to really see the layout.

From here we strolled over the Kensington Palace and walked through the museum part of that. (They've got a pretty good exhibit there. It's defiantly worth the hour or so that it takes.) From there we went to lunch and walked back to hotel. I spent the afternoon napping and getting ready to go out in the evening.

A group from the chorus signed up to join the BSO friends to go to My Fair Lady. It was a wonderful production. It's funny going to a revival show. I've listened to the original Broadway cast recording and seen the movie so often that my expectation of the timing was very strong. Lines spoken with a different cadence or songs sung at a different tempo seemed "wrong". A more rational part of me liked the freshness and new energy the changes gave the show, but the 'sing a long' part of me got stuck.
