This noontime we flew to Edinburgh. I love this city; partly because it looks so old, partly because most of the interesting tourist stuff is located in a small area and partly because the city is in a gorgeous landscape.
We didn't have much time for tourism this afternoon, so Jonelle and I decided to walk through Princes Park to Edinburgh castle. The park is beautiful. It's kind of a valley separating the castle from the city. I forgot to include the castle in the picture. It's up th hill off to the right. I guess the hill was a pretty easy place to defend and so the castle and the city grew up around it.
The castle has many layers, like and onion. This is part of the older castle that is inside the "newer" castle. |

You can see the layering more clearly in this picture. The stone in the wall in the left foreground are much older than the building towards the center. I think the chimneys beyond the wall are still part of the castle, probably newer still.
I'm not sure which direction this is facing to know what's the water in the background. This shot is from one of the higher levels of the castle. In the center is a tiny graveyard with markers along leaning against the wall. It also gives you an idea of the terracing in the castle. |
After the castle, I walked back through the park, checked my e-mail and headed home for the night. (By the way, did I mention how beautiful out hotel is? - very.) Tomorrow, it's back to work.
