This morning we had a rehearsal in Usher Hall. (The hall was given to the city by the Usher family, it's not just where the ushers work.) Usher Hall is round and kind of based on the Royal Albert Hall, only much smaller.
Inside there's not much backstage space. The orchestra trunks are jammed together in the back stage area. A reliable source said it's so crowded, the orchestra men are changing in an 18 wheeler truck parked out back.
Usher all from the stage looks and feels a little like Jordan Hall (only bigger and brighter). I didn't want to use a flash, so this picture started out really dark. I edited it to bring out some color. In general, the auditorium looks a lot like this from the stage. |
After rehearsal, I climbed the Walter Scott Memorial. The climb is in stages. Each staircase gets steeper. Each view gets better. As I was climbing each stairway, I kept thinking "O.K. this is it, I'll go back down." At each landing I kept thinking, "This view is great. I've got to see more". I did make it to the top. I took many pictures so I'll just post some of them with captions.
View to the east. (I'm not sure what this is) |
Me and Edinburgh Castle |
Edinburgh Castle |
Princes Park looking west |
Arthur's Seat (I think) |
Dan, nice man who helped me down the stairs |
After the climb, I decided to do a sitting activity so I took a tour of the city on a double decker bus and snapped pictures as we drove along. (Some how this affected the focus on many of the pictures.) This is the Walter Scott Memorial that I just finished climbing. (The focus on this came out O.K., it's just that the picture came out crooked.)
This is Saint Stephen's church with the Firth of Forth in the background. It's true, not all of the views in Edinburgh are this pretty, just most of them. |
