August 30 - Lubeck

Today has been dedicated to our a cappella concert tonight in the Cathedral (Dom). I slept late, had a big breakfast, read through some music and was down in the hotel lobby in time to board the bus to our rehearsal.

The cathedral is big, not as tall as St. Mariens, but still pretty big. It's an old church but clearly is still used as a modern worship space. The new is here along with the old. This is the altar area, located in the center of the church. Under the old cross and old pulpit is a contemporary altar table.
We sing from under this modern stain glass window at the back of the church. The reverberation is really long (like maybe 5 or 6 seconds). Clearly, some of the pieces we'll be singing tonight were written for spaces like this. The Cathedral is another instrument in our performance. The warmth is wonderful, if we can control it properly.
After rehearsal, we walked back to the hotel via a nice Italian restaurant that served wonderful pizza (which always makes me happy). We also took a quick detour to St Petri church (one of the many tall steeples in this town). St Petri has an elevator to the top of one of its steeple where there are some great views. This is Dom (the cathedral).
Here's a view of the new Concert Hall just outside of the old city, where we'll be back with the orchestra tomorrow.

The concert went well last night. There were over 600 people there who gave us a very warm reception. A few of the orchestra members and several of the BSO friends were there and all said what a fine concert it was. Unfortunately, it was not a "personal best", but the final product was good, so I'm happy. 1
