I believe every man has a deep need to be someone's hero; to have someone for whom he can conquer the world - in whatever form that may take. For me that person is Pam, my beautiful wife of nearly 14 years. She is my muse; my inspiration; the heart of our home. She has been with me through the good times and the bad (though it seemed sometimes the bad far outnumber the good); in health and sickness (and at times it seemed as though health would never return); and in poverty and ... well more prosperous times at least, if not wealth. Yet through it all she believed in me - even when I did not believe in myself.
So I sally forth to defeat whatever dragons there may be each day (and to tilt against the occasional windmill) with her token tied to my heart to give me courage and remind me that I have so much to be fighting for. And when I come home she celebrates the victories with me, and binds my wounds on those days when the dragons (or worse, the windmills) win. Then we repatch the armour, reshare the dream, and prepare for the next day - together.
Below is a song that reflects my feelings about our relationship. It was written by John Lennon and recorded by Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love
Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love
Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end
Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true
God bless our love
God bless our love
