Culloden Tower

Reviews:

- (P&S)..A fine approach through open grounds sweeping down to the River Swale. Once inside the views of Richmond and the river must be the best in (or slightly out of...) town. Unlike most  'tower' properties the rooms in Culloden are a good size, they have to be; the living room and main bedroom are an absolute wealth of plaster detail wherever you look and have very grand and high ceilings.

It's a long and dizzy path from the main bedroom to the toilet so leave that extra bottle at home, maybe.

(With thanks to John, Lesley, Clare and Hillary Gould for the invite.)

- From Hugo and Cindy, Cambridge.....This really does boast marvellous interiors in both the main bedroom and the splendid domed living room, it must be 20 feet high. Given a roaring fire it was a lovely place to snuggle up for the evening. The kitchen downstairs is lovely in a different way: a huge scarred old table and a low beamed ceiling - it used to be a hayloft, we infer - make it a good place to sit with the papers and a glass of wine or two. The location is excellent, 10 minutes walk from the market square of Richmond with shops and restaurants, and of course the glorious Richmond Castle. There is a large ruined Abbey further afield, again an easy walk. The views from the roof are great, the tower itself is sited atop a hill, and we had identified a Curry Restaurant and its neighbouring Chinese with binoculars from the living room soon after arrival. One gotcha: the curry restaurant is itself unlicenced, but they're very happy for you to take in a bottle of wine of 4-pack of beer. There are also some very fine traditional restaurants in the Theatre area of Richmond. 8/10 - just because it's not by the sea, otherwise lovely.

- From RJ, This is my favourite of all the 25 odd Landmarks I have stayed in. The building is eccentric but of the highest quality and, built in 1745, one of the first serious efforts of the Gothick revival. You are out of town a short way, whilst being conveniently close to the small town charms of Richmond. The torrents of the Swale below are wonderfully angry in winter. Its accessible by public transport - busses regularly from Darlington.
