Laughton Place

This is the warmest landmark we have ever stayed in. It has oil-fired
radiators, and if anything, got too warm! The gorgeous wide
brick-built full-height spiral stair causes a mighty updraught, so the air vent
at the bottom of the stairs is the perfect place to store beer and wine, in
a gale of cool outside air. The roof and its views are lovely, even in a
gale blowing; the sounds of the tower breathing in the wind made us leave
the bedroom door open at night so we could hear. Some of the windows let
in rain - don’t leave stuff on the kitchen windowsill/seat! But with
that excellent heating everything dried very quickly anyhow.
No complaints about the place being isolated for this one – its isolation
is part of its charm, and in fact there are many shops a short drive
away. A few dog-walkers and perhaps inhabitants of the nearby hamlet came
by, but all in all we were undisturbed. Lovely!
The moated island on which the tower stands is good, though little
Save foundations now remains of the other interesting buildings that used
to be here. The moat is deep and allegedly dangerous. No signs from the
log of problems with trespassing local yoof using it for swimming like at poor Stogursey.
Oh, and did we mention the marvellous heating? Therefore 9/10!

. I am the housekeeper of this property
and would
like to tell you about it. Laughton Place was built in 1534 on the
remains of
a building that has been dated back to 1209, today only the
castallated tower
remains but until the 1920's the tower was part of a much larger
building.
The tower is moated and is on a very rural part of the Sussex Weald.
Wildlife
is abundant (today I have been watching a pair of herons fish in the
moat and
a pair of blue tits feeding their young in an air brick on one of the
tower
walls) Laughton Place has an atmosphere of an old gentleman snoozing
in his
comfy chair, peaceful, reflective and relaxed. Children especially
find this
property magical with it's worn stone stairs, their very own castle
for a few
days. 1 1/2 hours from London and yet a world away.
