White House
Reviews:
(Provided by Julian Spicer) - The
usual picture of the White House (showing mainly the beautiful but plain Georgian
facade) is quite misleading. The house includes a 12C undercroft, a medieval
hall now with a huge central chinmey, a 16C cross wing, and a Georgian drawing
room on the end. Most exciting is that all these building phases are clearly
visable, so that it is a quirky and interesting place to stay. There are cosy
rooms with wide boards, exposed timber frame and inglenook fireplaces. At the
other end are serene proportions, sash windows and marble fireplaces. Overall
the atmosphere is especially warm and welcoming, even by Landmark standards.
The garden is gorgeous. It is not an easy place to find (and the directions
from Landmark are not a huge help) so take an OS map.
