GENERAL STUFF
Meet Ami. (Ah-mee, got it? Right.) This is one intelligent girl! Ami is a total bookworm. She reads all the time and constantly makes Usagi feel stupid without meaning to. The fact that she studies for fun doesn't help either. She goes to school at Juuban Junior High with Usagi and Makoto, but by the time Sailor Stars rolls around, she's enrolled in Juuban High School. Ami likes Usagi but she's had to slap her around a bit. (Cut from the English version, awww! ^_~) She appeared in episode 8, "Is the Genius Girl a Youma? The Brain Washing Cram School". When she transferred to Usagi's school, Luna thought she might be a spy from the Dark Kingdom. She was instead found to be Sailormercury (セーラーマーキュリー), the first Sailor Soldier to join Sailormoon, a true genius, and the brains behind the Inner Senshi. Hey, with an IQ of 300, what else are you gonna do? ^_~ She's very uncompetetive to the point of intentionally throwing races to avoid a conflict. She does get offended when someone challenges her brains, though. She always thinks before she acts; thus, her attacks are mainly illusional, used for distraction, not destruction, and are water, ice, or bubble based.
MY OPINION
I do like Ami, but she isn't one of my favorites now that I've seen original Japanese episodes. She's very timid and unassuming to the point of being almost asocial. She chooses to remain loveless and friendless except the big M and crew) so that she can immerse herself in her studies. I'm all for being smart and such, but her character just doesn't pull it off very well. Ami sometimes alternates from going overboard to holding back too far. She's very loyal; however, unlike Mars, her loyalty is shown in more subtle tones. She tended to be the favorite of the senshi in Japan, hence getting her own TV special. Personally, I think Michiru carries the role better, despite the whole lesbian thing. ^^; In truth, much of her is very plain and generic for the entire anime series. For example, her original fuku was okay. I like blue, but the boots are exactly like Moon's and Pluto's. Her Super fuku was as generic as the others although I liked her sleeveless fuku in the manga best. I like her henshin sequence, though, especially into her Super form. Ami was often drawn in the earlier seasons with her hair glued to her head and blank eyes. Fortunately, this improved later on. She is actually very pretty (and bossy) in the manga. Although she is a soft, gentle person, Sailormercury is one tough cookie, and it shows!
