The addition to the environment of subsatances that can not rendered harmless by
normal bilogical process. Modern industrial and agricultural activities have led to the pollution
of land, rivers, seas, and the atmosphere by either man-made toxic substances (such as
pesticides and fertilizers) or by the overproduction of naturally occurring substances(such as
carbon dioxide gas). Pesticides, such as DDT (dichlorophenyltrichloroethane), can build up in the
environment and the bodies of living organisms until they reach toxic levels. Other forms of
pollution may have long-term effects on the health of living things, including man. Current
problems include the disposal of radioactive wastes; increasing amounts of heavy metals (such as
lead) in the atmospheric pollution by carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc.; the disposal of human
refuse and sewage; and unacceptable noise levels. In many cases a technical solution to these
problems is available but cannot be implemented because the cost is too high or because of
conflict with minority interests.
