Edita Gruberová
Born: Bratislava, 23 December 1946
Début: Bratislava, 1968, Rosina
Edita Gruberová is a coloratura with some very impressive qualties indeed. She has a much larger voice than most sopranos of her voice type, so that as well as the typical coloratura roles she is able to sing more dramatic and lyric parts such as Donna Anna, Violetta and Konstanze without any lack of power. In addition she has an incredible technique and the most staggering breath control. She is able to spin out pianissimos on the highest notes, and no trills, fioritura or runs are beyond her. Consequently, a role such as Violetta, generally taken by a lyric soprano with some vocal extension where necessary, sounds completely different in her hands, high notes and phrases moulded with total control. Her voice is sometimes a little squeezed or hard-edged, but in spite of this there is nobody who can match her in most of her repertoire.
Gruberovä is perhaps most celebrated for her bel canto singing. She has recorded quite a few Donizetti rarities, and is probably the nearest successor we have to Joan Sutherland, except that unlike Sutherland she can act as well. Her most conspicuous departure from Italian repertoire and Mozart is Zerbinetta, a role she is legendary for, and which she sings with flamboyant energy. She also vies with Sumi Jo for most recordings of the Queen of the Night.
