Adrian Raven is the Conductor and Musical Director of the Auckland Wind Orchestra. Originally from England, Adrian arrived in New Zealand in 1990 and has since established himself as one of the country's leading Brass Band and Symphonic Band conductors. He has worked with numerous ensembles throughout New Zealand including the Telecom Hamilton Brass, the Papkaura Civic Orchestra, the Dalewool Auckland Brass, the Kings College Concert Band, the North Shore Concert Band and Concept Brass (formerly known as Papakura City Brass). As a tuba player Adrian has performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia, the Auckland Chamber Orchestra as well as being in demand as a clinician at various regional band workshops.
Rod McLeay, Dip Tch. Rod has been conductor of the Junior Band for over 20 years. He is an intermediate schoolteacher with a major interest in music. Many young players have their first experience of band playing under his baton in his school orchestra, and in the Auckland Primary Principals' Association Concert Band which he conducts for the Town Hall Music Festival each year. Rod's work in music has been acknowledged with awards from the Multi-Serve Trust, the Waitakere City and Western District Community and Sports Foundation, and the Rotary Club of Henderson.
The Auckland Wind Orchestra draws leading wind and percussion musicians from the Auckland region. It is considered one of the premier wind ensembles in New Zealand and performs regularly throughout Auckland. The Auckland Wind Orchestra has received critical acclaim from overseas adjudicators, high praise from international guest conductors, and always gets an excellent response from its audience. The aims of the Auckland Wind Orchestra include regular performances, work with high calibre soloists and conductors, and raising the profile of wind music in New Zealand. The Auckland Wind Orchestra Ensembles were formed as small woodwind, brass and percussion groups to perform a range of musical styles, suitable for a variety of events: weddings, garden parties, balls, cocktails, conferences, promotions, cruises or any special occasion.
The AYSB draws it's members from secondary schools throughout the Auckland area, this venue being for many, their first opportunity to play in a symphonic band. All members of the band have attained a minimum of grade 3 in their particular instrument, and look to improve their level of playing through regular rehearsals and performances. The repertoire of the AYSB is wide, with regular performances ranging from show tunes to grand classics and original scores for band.
