That seems VERY young to me -- I remember being forced to wait till 9, and then spent very limited time on pointe. Everything was beautiful. I was so suprised to find so many halpful hints about my dancing technique. Hi! I took ballet for 2yr when I was small, but still have good turnout and since that I started taking Irish Dance 4 years ago. now. I love it! I still practice my Plie's and releve's though because it is important to keep moving. I have very strong and flexible ankles from dance class and sometimes I pull out the old pointe shoes to see the beauty of the dance. I wish I were more flexible, but I'm workin' on it. I hope everyone enjoyes the dance whatever YOUR EXPERIENCE IS! Never quit because you re "too old" vecause my mom is 40 and kicks my butt at dancing. She does mid-eastern and Irish. Remember to never give up!

I love dancing! I used to take ballet about seven years ago, now I will be taking ballet lessions hopefully sometime next weekend. I am 13 years old, everytime I asked if I was too old to be taking ballet- the answer was no, you can start ballet at any ag ! So any one who has your hopes down for becoming a good dancer because of your age, snap out of it and get to those dance lessons!! I like this site it is really interesting and has a lot of great information. I live in a small town with only two dance studio's. They are very small so we don't really have very much good information about some things that have to do with ballet. I think your site is really great! I am hopeing you can give me some advice. When I was in third grade I took one year of classes. But I couldn't go back because of money. I never have. I really want to dance. I have gone to the libary and looked in books and coped stuff down. I practice in a tiny spot on my floor. Last year I tried out for drill team and made manager. I was not in the preformaence because the choreagraphy was way too provocative for junior high. I keep on trying to work up the nerve to as my mom to send me to classes, but my brother takes voice lessons, and I will be taking violin lessons. It's not cast in stone, but I'm being homeschooled and so can't do the in school thing, and I've been playing for 3 years. I like it, but I'm not that ood. I do not have he right body shape for ballet. How can I ask my mom?

Hi just a question, I am 17 and have had about 10 lessons in ballet, but I just can't seem to get my posture right and my teacher has to keep coming over and prodding me and fixing me to get me right, I am flexible but my turnout is terrible, and it's really horrible that I a in a class with 5 year olds who can do everything that I can't. It's really frustrating, my aim is to do ballet for quite a number of more years and than maybe reach the ability to go o n pointe, but I realise that could be 5 -7 years away or more due t my lack of ability and strength. Have you any pointers of how to improve turnout and mainly posture. I think this is a great site. I have a question though I love dancing a lot I danced ballet when I was young for 5years and then went into other stuff like pop warner dance line and guard in highschool. yep, this's a great site! In answer to Lea's question; I think blochs are ok pointe shoes (eg, Suprimas, Sylphides are student model shoes), but you could try Gaynor Mindens- they're abit pricey though.. It really depends on your foot;(the ones i suggested are what was good on me) try going to a big ballet st re and they should be able to help you out!

Hi! My name's Lea and i'd appreciate ANYONE'S advice on this... a teacher at my studio took one look at my pointe shoes and told me i needed new ones. She said the Sanshas i have now are too weak through the toes, and (now I notice, a bit too late!) that 've worn down the edges of my platform, leaving me wobbling & standing on very, very little space to dance. Which has caused all kinds of problems (too much weight on the bar, hips too far forward and shoulders too far back, and really weak wobbly ankles. i plan on getting new shoes soon, but have no clue which are hard enough in the toes- Miss Inga reccommended either Capezios or Grishkos. Does anyone have any helpful advice?

I am the mother of a 9 and 6 year old. They have both been dancing since they were two years old. They have always danced between 4-6 hours per week. We are from the USA, but are currently residing in Japan with the military. We have a Japanese ballet teacher. The problem that I have is that we have always been told and have done some research that tells me that children should not start pointe until 11-12 years of age. The teacher we are currently using recently approached me and recommended that my girls are ready to begin some pointe. I expressed my concern to her, but she stated that she understands that but it depends on the child. She feels that both of my girls are strong enough and ready to begin. I don't want to make the wrong decision and ruin their dancing careers forever. Help. Any advise will be a benefit. Thanks for you time and quick response. TAM

First of all, how can I strengthen my ankles and increase my foot arch? Second, last year I weighed 105 lbs. at 5'3''. I exercised constantly, and ate very little. I felt my eight was perfect, but my friends and family felt I looked unhealthy. Soon after, I picked up on my eating habits. I ate anything and everything I wanted to, sometimes to the point of feeling really sick. I have a HUGE appetite. Now I am still the same height, but weigh 124 lbs. I'm not fat in the least--I just need to make my butt, thighs, and waistline smaller. I take weightlifting at school, which was also responsible for the weight gain.b How can I stay strong, but avoid excess muscle. I want to ook absolutely perfect: without even an ounce of excess fat. I want to be strong for success in my dancing, but want to look as skinny as the professional ballerinas. My ideal weight is 100 lbs. What do you recommend? Having difficulty with ribbons staying tucked in at the back of my ankle. I sew a very thin 'scarf hem' to finish the raw edge, so the ribbons threads don't unravel . But, after I tie the ribbons around my ankle and tuck them in, they always seem to pop out during class. I have been tucking them in at the lower end of the laced ribbon instead of over the top, don't know if that makes any difference. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help.

I'm only 15, and i don't have dancer legs and feet (I have skier legs), and would never dream of being a dancer for life, but I love ballet! Even though I live in the capital of Alaska, there are no places to buy shoes. I have found the Bloch Signature Re ersal work nicely, but break in too fast. I'm afraid to order anything I wouldn't like, there's no place to get fittings, so if anyone has any info about a stronger pointe shoe that is very similar, please email me. I have strong feet, but a very small ar h. Thanx!

I really didn't like my childhood ballet class experience very much, but my aunts were dancers and my father wanted me to follow in their "dancesteps". My body wasn't fit to be a dancer's and I really wanted to sing, which I still do to this day in New ork. Today, however, I wouldn't trade that ballet class experience for anything. I love the ballet with a much deeper appreciation because of it. Thanks Dad. I guess it's in the genes. Also, this is a great educational site. Love the nomenclature dictionary. One suggestion - more pictures to illustrate the positions and steps. I can visualize the movements, but it would be a great help to beginners.

I love ballet but when i was 3 i quit i was ahead of my whole class of 100 and some i was always sent upstiars with the teens because i was better then them but something happened i had to quit we could not afford it any more.:'( But now i am 11 i started to take gymnastics i wanted to tumble i got diagnosed with a case of scliois or that back problem and there was something wrong with my legs they could not figure out i still have all of those problems but i decided i was going to get out of the house get good grades get more friends and what i missed the most ballet dance anything i like tennis but i went and started ballet a week ago i go 2 times a week i can stand on my toes and do a parlet i am not a very good speller sorry but they were having a recit et it wasin a week i could get the outfit and everything but i missed a half of year of practice for it when i would sit out when they would practice i thought it looked easy i watched for two weeks now and i wathched the main lead the most because they h d to keep re doing cause the girl doing it messed up so much when everyone l;left i was there still cause my dad was late so i started dancing the lead part in the recitle the teacher walked in and the next thing i was costume fitting i did well in the play and i went to visit my old teacher nancy sauer but she retired at 81 or 91 i can't remeber but i do remeber the smell i lo ed the smell there and all ballet places but that one had a special smell that i will never for get yours truly, Kati Jo p.s i really am back on my toes!

I LOVE ballet it makes me feel alive I saw my first ballet at age nine it was about two hours my family tought I would get bored. To tell you the truth so did I!
