After seeing the jokes about the Basses always being out of tune, reminded me so much of the Symphony Orchestra camp I went to! One time at the 3 hour long rehersal, the director spent 20 minuetes on the basses, and hey still werent in tune!! By the way, I heard somewhere that the Bassoon was No.3 in most Concertos written for it, (of coarse, being followed by the Violin and the Piano) is that True? I'd have to say that the Bassoon is best when placed in a Full Symph ny Orchestra, but there is really neat things in band... Keep up the Awesome Work! |

Top Ten Reasons To Play The Oboe 10. People pay attention long enough to figure out what the heck that thing is you're playing. 9. Learning to transpose music as you play (from reading flute parts). 8. The case is a good weapon is emergencies; bigger than a flute case, can act as a shield and yet is portable! 7. If you lose your music, the bells always have the same part. 6. If you lose you music, the flutes always have the same part. 5. If you lose your music, somebody at some point in the piece has the same part!! 4. You can always hide in the clarinet section. 3. No one cares if you're not heard. 2. You always get your own stand. 1. No Competition!! (At least, not in the same band.) Five Reasons Not To Play the Oboe 5. Oboe reeds are more expensive than clarinet and sax reeds 4. Having to learn to transpose music as you play (because there's not an oboe part in at least half the pieces the band will perform!!) 3. Having to explain that it's an oboe not a clarinet every single day. (It will also be incumbent upon you to explain what the water is for. Only every other day but it takes longer to explain why you have to soak your reed in water instead of using spit especially for regular reed instrument players.) 2. Flutes hitting you in the shoulder. 1. Cutting your tounge on the reed. |

We're Rich and Stephen. Rich is the dad; Stephen is the 9 year old son. Stephen is interested in possibly starting to play the bassoon. Though he is only 9, he is bigger and (he says) stronger than most 9 year olds. Do you think he could play th bassoon now? I have recently met a high school boy who plays the bassoon and he is going to let us see his so that Stephen can try to hold it, etc. Some have told us that he should start with playing the clarinet, however, he has no interest in clarine . He would rather do oboe if bassoon doesn't work out. I (Rich) have experience with brass intstruments, but this woodwind stuff is all new to me! A Bassoon, seems pretty docile to me, but if you get pleasure out of it, that's good. You're jokes, were ummm, slightly too musically related for me to understand some of them-as I just play the guitar, I don't know anything about it, I just pick it up, p ay it, if it sounds good, yeah that's right. It's much more like a feeling then, rather than just a load of written notes and rules which have been followed. Oh, and the puzzle is impossible, liturally-it IS actually impossible, unless you fold one edge of the paper over and write on the back. I really would like to say it's a good site and praise it's appearance, but I do the art design for websites...so I'm afraid I'd be lying...sorry. But it has the information, which is half of it...and who am I to judge, when I'm just a passer by. |

I'm sick of composers making a mockery of this instrument. The truth is, it's not funny at all, it's very serious and a hell of a lot harder to play than most other instruments. The bassoon's definitely not t e "clown of the orchestra." It is in fact vital to the existence of the wood wind section. Most people who write the books about orchestration are idiots with nothing better to do than write books about orchestration. Listen to some quotations. I swear to God these are 100% true: On the Bass Clarinet: "It is incapable of expression" "Thin and bleak" "The lowest member of the clarinet family" (ha!) On the bassoon: "Humorous" "Grotesque" "Disgusting" On the Bass: "A dangerous elephant of an instrument" On the Ophicleide: "This instrument does not belong in our good Catholic religion" (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) On the Sarrusophone: "The Surrosophone (sic) seems to have been invented by some genial lunatic" The people who come up with this are obviously mistaken in the truest sense of the word. Anyway, the bassoon is not a clown, nor a sound effect. My best friend plays the oboe , but no one ever calls her oboe a bassoon!!! This is my first time surfing the net (I don't even know my address). Just a warning to those bodacious bassoon playing babes - DO NOT WEAR STRAPLESS DRESSES FOR CONCERTS!!! In college, I was playing the contra bassoon solo in the Mother Goose Suite by Ravel. I had a contra solo at the end of one movement, and a big bassoon solo started the next movement. I held my dress with one and and lowered the contra down on the stage. That seemed to be working - untill the contra started to slide off the riser!!! Gee, save my dress or a $15,000 instrument that didn't belong to me? Well, the contra won but I lost the top of my dress!!!!!! Lu kily the only people who saw were the trumpet players - the conductor chewed them out after that because he couldn't get their attention. I left my mark at that university - they banned strapless dresses after my exposure. That would have to be my most em arrassing bassoon moment (although I did have an call back for a big audition two days after my wisdom teeth were pulled - I blew stiches and had blood dripping off my reed!!! Later I found out that they didn't even have an opening - they were just going hrough the motions!!! Oh yeh, there was also the time an actor fell into the pit and landed on my head!!!! Fortunately, the clarinet player stopped him from falling in my lap completely - just a bent bocal (luckily I was using my piece of crap bocal becau e the piano was almost a half step sharp!!!) Ahh, the joys of playing the bassoon!!! I'm very happy to find a site for my kind of people - BASSOONIST'S RULE!!! |

This is something that used to happen to me a lot when I was a bassoonist at school. (The ONLY bassoonist at school - a common problem). Dear Bob I am no longer a bassoonist (sad to say, life has got the better of me at present), but this is a problem that must be common to many bassoonists and I pray for your wise counsel. When I was in school band and orchestra, some bastard would always write, at the top of the bassoon part, either "Fagott" or "Fagotti". All the other kids would laugh and go "Fag ! Fag !" As I was the only bassoonist there (in a very large band) I felt qu te outnumbered and insecure. I couldn't make them understand the nobility and empathy that the bassoon possesses, at least not with my particular bassoon talents. Surely you have had this problem and felt quite cut off from other "cool" instruments like s xophones (of course, I sat next to all of these guys). Eleventh grade, East Brunswick, New Jersey, in Band, Wind Ensemble, Region, All-State, Marching band (3A champions with Miss Saigon show, trying for 3 Open with Phantom of the Opera), 15 years old, mostly alone (by choice mainly . Being the entire East Brunswick bassoon section can get quite lonely, but I like it anyway. I've only been playing for 1 year, but it's not really difficult (except for the high C n Wagner's "Elsa's Procession"). By the way, ignore my email address for a while.
