Verdienstkreuz für Cramer

Lessings "Nathan" für Rau

Der Berliner Journalist Ernst Cramer erhielt am Donnerstag aus der Hand des Bundespräsidenten das Große Verdienstkreuz mit Stern und Schulterband. In seiner sehr persönlich gehaltenen Laudatio zählte Johannes Rau drei Leitmotive aus Cramers langjähriger publizistischer Tätigkeit auf: die Herstellung der deutschen Einheit, die Partnerschaft mit Amerika und die Aussöhnung zwischen dem deutschen und dem israelischen Volk.

Bei der Verleihung waren neben Mitgliedern von Cramers Familie auch Freunde aus verschiedenen Phasen seines 88-jährigen Lebens zugegen. Prominentester Gast war Alt-Bundeskanzler Helmut Kohl. Friede Springer war ebenso gekommen wie etliche Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus dem Axel Springer Verlag.

Nach seiner Dankadresse überraschte Cramer den Bundespräsidenten mit einem besonderen Geschenk. Er übergab einem sichtlich gerührten Johannes Rau eine vergilbte Erstausgabe - von 1779 - von Lessings "Nathan der Weise", die aus dem Nachlass des 1977 verstorbenen Berliner Journalisten Hans Wallenberg stammt.

To remember the lives, contributions and culture of the pre WWII Jewish comunity in Augsburg, which existed for almost 800 years in Germany, and to compile a Book of Memoirs to keep alive the memories of those who died

To allow future generations to understand our common threads of being children of Holocaust survivors - The Essay Project

To relate to the current Jewish community in Augsburg

An irony of history is that there are now more Jews living in Augsburg, Germany than before the Nazi Era. So there is an ongoing Jewish presence in Augsburg today. This website has been created by the second generation of those Jewish Holocaust Survivors who used to live in Augsburg before the war. While the present Augsburger Jews are mostly from Eastern European countries (or from Displaced Persons Camps after the war) there were Jews living in Augsburg for hundreds of years. This site is dedicated to the memories of those Augsburger Jews who died during the Holocaust and to the former community.

We found that the Prayer Book used by the Jewish Congregation of Augsburg (printed in Augsburg in 1917) contained the following prayer for the Fatherland. Indeed, these are the rules Jews lived by in the Diaspora, but how odd these lines sound in hindsight.

Grundsaetze der judischen Sittenlehre
Des Vaterlandes Heil zu suchen.
Das Judentum gebietet: das Vaterland zu lieben und fur dessen Ehre, Gedeihen und Freiheit Gut und Blut willig zu opfern.
Foundation of the Jewish Moral Laws:
To seek the well being of the fatherland.
That Judaism asks to love your fatherland and to willingly sacrifice your wealth and your blood for honor, growth and freedom.
