Female Chamber Choir "Lyra"
Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria
Conductor: Galina Popova
History of the Choir
Female Chamber Choir Lyra was founded in 1988 by the conductor Galina Popova. The choir was a natural continuation of a childrens' choir led by the same conductor and a winner of a number of prizes on national choral festivals and forums of choral art. This previous experience helped the new formation to become a wonderful ensemble in a short time.
The repertoire of the choir includes pieces of sacred and secular music of different styles and periods:
- Renaissance, Baroque (Monteverdi, John Hilton, Thomas Morley, Lotti, Pergolese)
- Contemporary music (Tekeliev, N. Kaufmann, Marinov, B. Britten, Poulenc)
- Bulgarian Folk Music
The choir has performed cantatas and oratorias ("Stabat Mater" - Pergolese, "Missa Brevis in D" - Britten). It participates in productions of the Blagoevgrad Chamber Opera ("The Little Chimney Sweeper" - B. Britten, "The Experienced" - A. Jossifov, "Granny's Cake" - P. Hadjiev). Studio and TV recordings are an inseperable part of choir's activities.
