Welcome Vienna Residents and VisitorsEarly in the year 2000, Yahoo!/Geocities decided that member sites would be given URLs that corresponded to usernames. For example,
Although that undoubtably makes it easier to remember and type, it has the effect of eliminating the neighborhood name from the URL. Back in the 'old days', a homesteader would pick a neighborhood based on the neighborhood's specific interest. For instance, the Vienna neighborhood and its suburbs were devoted to Classical Music, Ballet, Opera, and other concerns relating to the philosophy, composition, performance, and presentation of 'Art' Music. The homesteader would then apply for a site within that neighborhood. Now the possibility exists that a homesteader may join up with Geocities and obtain a site without belonging to or participating in a neighborhood. Homesteaders may develop their sites and choose to affiliate with a neighborhood later if they wish. Although this would seem to insure that only genuinely interested homesteaders participate in the community experience, the visibility of the neighborhood as such will require active promoting from the homesteaders if the character of the neighborhood is to be preserved. Therefore, we urge those Vienna citizens who are proud of their Vienna membership and who wish to participate fully in the Vienna experience to join the Vienna Residents Club, a continuing post where citizens may voice their opinions and share their dreams, and keep informed of the day-to-day community development.
Furthermore, if your site meets the
community guidelines, you are invited to download and
display the graphic at the left on your site.
If you are a recent homesteader in Geocities and have not yet joined a neighborhood, go to http://geocities.datacellar.net/neighborhoods and click on the "Join a Neighborhood" link in the upper right corner.
