CHILDREN OF JOHN AND ALLICE GELLY - All born in Ireland

1. HUGH GELLY - Born Oct. 23, 1832. Died July 2, 1924. Hugh was the first member of the family to arrive in America , leaving Ireland in December of 1850 and arriving in America in February of 1851. He acquired a farm near Trenton, Illinois, and then made arrangements the passage of his parents and siblings, who arrived later in 1851.
Married MARGRETTE BROWN - Born in County Down, Ireland Jan. 1, 1838. Died Feb. 9, 1912. She was an orphan who came to the US in 1857 and worked as a hotel maid in New York City until she earned enough money to travel to Trenton, where they married in 1860.

2. MARY JANE GELLY - Born in 1836.
M. 1) BENJAMIN LOGAN in 1856. Killed in the battle of Shiloh in the Civil War.

NOTE: One story of the spelling of the name is that John Jelly's "J"s looked like "G"s.(The correct pronunciation of Gelly is with a soft "G".) Another story is that John "deserted the rebel army and changed it to avoid court martial by England".
