The Charles "Dick" Ames Memorial
Childhood Joy
His smile shone down the valley
as the brilliant sunshine,
on the fields of oats, corn, and hay,
and the hearts of us, children at play.
Baling hay on top the hill,
We stack the bales row upon row,
A chuck-hole rolls the wagon over
Boys and bales hit the clover.
A milk truck climbed Hogback Hill
Dick at the front and I at the back
The window broke, the truck stopped,
and the milk flowed, and flowed, and flowed.
Mischief too, was sometimes there
Barker Hartman, you'd best beware!
You'll lose your plums and watermelons
deep in the fields of corn.
His smile now shines elsewhere,
childhood has ended, the sun has gone,
and we are left--
alone, but not alone.
Death cannot efface
this man and put despair in his place!
In heart and mind he lives on still,
for we remember and always will.
