Carnatic music tidbits on the Dhikshithar school's nomenclature of rAgams and how they correspond to traditional sampUrna mELakarthA rAgams are discussed in this page.
The notation used in this page is same as that used in all pages in this site and is described in rAgams page. The terms graha bEdham and sruthi bEdham are described with examples in the audava rAgams analysis page. An analysis of audava-sampUrna rAgams and sampUrna-audava rAgams has been compiled too.
Dhikshitar school rAgams
There are quite a few minor items of concern to us that there is more than one system in vogue. There are rAgams which have the same name in the two systems whose structures are different, while at the same time there are rAgams with same structure but different names. The names used by the Dikshitar school are also important to us, since Muthuswami Dhikshitar has woven the names of the rAgams into most of his compositions.
some rAgams with same name & structure
mAyA mALava gowLa (15th mELakarthA rAgam) and DhIra shan'karAbharaNam (29th mELakarthA rAgam) retain the same name & structure in both the naming systems.
gamakakriyA has the same structure in both systems, but due to the vakra prayOgam in ArOHanam & absence of nishAdham in the same, it is considered a janyam of 53rd mELakartha in the common usage, while it is the 53rd mELakartha in the Venkatamakhi system. Similarly shrI rAgam is treated as the 22nd mELakarthA in the Venkatamakhi system, while it is considered a janyam of the 22nd mELakarthA in common usage.
rAgams with same structure, but given different names
The following is a list of rAgams that have the same structure, but have been given different names by Venkatamakhi (used by Dhikshitar school) and Govindacharya. Venkatamakhi & Govindacharya were the pioneers of the mELakartha rAgam classification, along with naming them & extending the then used list of rAgams into a complete circle using permutations.
