Glenn Gould(Sorry, this page is under construction and contents may wrong or mislead you. If you have any question and correction, please let me know)
I have nothing to add to well-documented notes for Mr. Gould by SONY classical, which present track listing of all CD's currently available from SONY. Because some issues are not currently available worldwide, CD numbers have not been present at the site.
Liner notes on the Glenn Gould edition CDs are real bonus and we can retrospect his carrier with them. For more information, please refer to following articles. And if you would like to know much more about Mr. Gould, as a journalist rather than a pianist, please read the following article.
- "Glenn Gould: A life and variations" by Otto Friedrich (1989)
- "Glenn Gould reader" ed. Tim Page (1990?)
Most of all the Glenn Gould edition's CD numbers and stamp numbers are listed below in an numerical order of the CD number. Some of CD releases from other companies are also listed. You can find missing numbers of the edition, they probably be assigned to further releases but canceled by some reasons.

There is no need to say buy, but I have some comments for those who are tempting to complete Mr. Gould's CD hitherto released.

Supplemental issues
This release includes first stereo releases of the first and last movements of the fifth and sixth. You can hear deterioration of the original monaural session tapes when their second movements start, and will hope discovery of the stereo tapes still remained undiscovered. Frank Dean Denowitz found on earlier releases of the source is an anagram of the producer's name (Andrew Fenton Kazdin).Bach's "the 48" and Beethoven's last three sonatas
In most cases, the Glenn Gould edition releases sound better than CD releases prior to the edition. This "the 48" set is a typical example. Another example is "the last three sonatas" by L. v. Beethoven. We can hear two CD releases: Glenn Gould Legacy vol. II (M3K 39036) and in the edition. The former was made from simply digitized old master (probably old remixed tape for LP cutting) and the edition was made from newly digitally remixed from the original (spliced) session tapes with high-bit processing.Two- and three-part inventions
If you have the "Masterworks Portrait" LP, please compare their sound with each other. The edition CD and US-pressed LP sound fairly close, but the latter is more vivid, in spite of more hiss and noize. (Most of the LP distribution in non US countries were Austrian pressings). This tendency have been found on the early releases of the edition (particularly "Glenn Gould Edition vol. 1").Goldberg variations (1981 recording)
The 1981 recording have not been issued as a part of the edition in the US. Therefore US DADC pressing of the SMK 52 619 is not available. Some said the recording will be digitally re-mastered from analog tapes recorded simultaneously at the sessions, but it might be just a rumor. This recording is of course available in the US with old CD number for, and at, full-price (first CD released was made in Japan, and made in US since 1996). Budget price release, distributed worldwide incl. US is Austrian pressing. The art of fugue
I bought the US press CD and found misprint of a leaflet. So I asked local dealer to exchange it to correct one. When I recieved correctly printed one, which was printed in Austria, I found there are different photos on these leaflets. Do you have any information abut a difference of this kind?Goldberg variations (live in Salzburg)
This recording have been released twice in short period, first was a part of the edition and second a part of the Festspieldokvmente releases. The latter sounds better, probably because the former was made from a copy for CBC Broadcast (by worldwide transcription service of ORF). On the other hand, Salzburg Festspieldokvmente release was made directly from the original ORF archival tapes. Even the Salzburg Festspieldokvmente release, however, it is not a complete document of the recital: Small encore pieces were not recorded by ORF.Missing numbers
Sequential numbering of the edition (some were assigned to each CD) and therefore presence of "missing numbers" in this edition suggest that there would be some materials, recorded live or simple considered to be released commercially, were planned to be released under the edition. They probably included famous Bach's D-minor concerto (now available as a part of "Festspieldokvmente catalog 2000") and Stratford festival materials. For some reasons, most probably copyright issue, they have been still remained unissued. Recent release of Brahms' concerto under SK (indicating full pricing instead of SMK - mid pricing) suggest that such once-canceled releases will be available at full-price in future, not a part of the edition. Bach's planned-but-delayed concerti CD will be avaiable at full-price.
CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) issues
The job contract between Mr. Gould and Columbia agreed at 1955 was exclusive. His all "music" recordings have been thus released from SONY classical with a few exceptions. CBC records, however, can release Mr. Gould's music recordings made prior to the contract and non-music recordings made even after the contract. So, there are some CD releases contaning his pre-Columbia era recordings and also his radio documentaries. I would like to recommend you to discard these recordings because CBC recordings are less attractive than the Columbia alternatives and basically there is no new repartoire. His radio documentaries, please recall the fact that he had been a pianist rather than a journalist. These CBC releases would be useful if you tend to analyze history of his piano playing and different aspects of his lifetime-activity.
Glenn Gould at Stockholm
Not a pirate issue! These recordings have been licensed from Swedish Radio Corporation to BIS. Currently available in two-far package. On very early pressings, fourth movement of the Beethoven sonata had not been printed on the tracking information (included in disk, of course).
Glenn Gould in Moscow (CD issued from Le Chant du Monde)
Live recording of the lecture concert at the Great Hall of the Moscow conservatire. Most clearly recorded were voices of Russian interpreter. These recordings are currently not available from SONY, whereas recordings from the same tour have been released as parts of the Glenn Gould edition (e.g., Inventions (incomplete) on SMK 52 685).
