Personal Interests, Foibles, Opinions and Other Bad Habits

"To be nobody-but-yourself--in a world which is doing its best night and day, to make you everybody else--means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting."
e.e. cummings

But now I know the things I know,
And do the things I do;
And if you do not like me so,
To hell, my love, with you!
Dorothy Parker

If you are Ann Landers you don't know that 90% of the Web is pure, wholesome Family Entertainment. If you aren't Ann Landers you probably already know where all the smut is so don't expect me to tell you. When you get fed up with "85 Channels and Nothing On" Cable TV and there aren't any good wierdos in the AOL Chat Rooms to watch, check out the Links below. These are my favorites and the list grows as I wander around the Web. You won't like all of what you see here (except Harpo, of course...everybody loves Harpo) and there may even be some swine out there who isn't a Diana Rigg fan, but if you can't find something on this page that's better than watching CSPAN you are in need of serious therapy.

(Well....OK...the Smut is here...but don't say I didn't warn you!)

INTERESTING PEOPLE

JoeBob

"The truly wide taste in humanity will similarly find something to appreciate in the cross-section of humanity whom one has to meet every day. In my experience it is Affection that creates this taste, teaching us first to endure, then to smile at, then to enjoy, and finally to appreciate, the people who "happen to be there." Made for us? Thank God, no. They are themselves odder than you could have believed and worth more than you had guessed."

Bewildered them till they died?
I write it out in a verse-

THE GODDESS

MsPiggy

"The presence that thus rose so strangely beside the waters, is expressive of what in the ways of a thousand years men had come to desire. Hers is the head upon which all 'the ends of the world are come' and the eyelids are a little weary...Set it for a moment beside one of those white Greek goddesses or beautiful women of antiquity, and how would they be troubled by this beauty, into which the soul with all its maladies has passed?"

NONE OF THE ABOVE

Highly Important and Socially Relevant Topics you won't see here (unless I get a better idea, in which case I'll delete it from here and sneak it in somewhere else and you'll never know) because somebody else already said the last word on them.
Sex

Nope....sorry...I already told
you where the Smut was.
Politics

"I remember Sam, he was the village idiot,
And though it seems a pity, it was so.
He loved to burn down houses just to watch the glow,
And nothing could be done,
Because he was the mayor's son."
Tom Lehrer - "My Home Town"
Religion

"First you get down on your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!"
Tom Lehrer - "The Vatican Rag"
Ecology

"So if Sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park.
And maybe we'll do
In a squirrel or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park."
Tom Lehrer - "Poisoning Pigeons In The Park"
The Military

The heart of every man in our platoon must swell with pride,
For the nation's youth, the cream of which is marching at his side.
For the fascinating rules and regulations that we share,
And the quaint and curious costumes that we're called upon to wear.
Tom Lehrer - "It Makes A Fellow Proud To Be A Soldier"

(Starting to see a pattern here?)

Scholastic Integrity

"Plagiarize,
Let no one else's work evade your eyes,
Remember why the good Lord made your eyes,
So don't shade your eyes,
But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize...
Only be sure always to call it please 'research'".
Tom Lehrer - "Lobachevsky"
International Relations

"For might makes right,
And till they've seen the light,
They've got to be protected,
All their rights respected,
Till somebody we like can be elected."
Tom Lehrer - "Send The Marines"
Travel

"The moment had come,
I swallowed my gum,
We knew there'd be blood on the sand pretty soon.
The crowd held its breath,
Hoping that death
Would brighten an otherwise dull afternoon."
Tom Lehrer - "In Old Mexico"
The Dating Game

"So though for breakfast she makes
coffee that tastes like sham-poo,
I come home for dinner and
get peanut butter stew,
Or, if I'm in luck,
It's broiled hockey puck,
But, oh well, what the hell,
She's my girl,
And I love her."
Tom Lehrer - "She's My Girl"
Music

"The tune don't have to be clever,
And it don't matter if you put a couple extra syllables into a line.
It sounds more ethnic if it ain't good English
And it don't even gotta rhyme...excuse me: rhyne!
Tom Lehrer - "The Folk Song Army"
Uh...Esoterica

"Let our love be a flame, not an ember,
Say it's me that you want to dismember.
Blacken my eye,
Set fire to my tie,
As we dance to the Masochism Tango."
Tom Lehrer - "The Masochism Tango"
Machismo

"I always will remember,
'Twas a year ago November,
I went out to hunt some deer
On a morning bright and clear.
I went and shot the maximum the game laws would allow:
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow."
Tom Lehrer - "The Hunting Song"
Higher Education

Oh, soon we'll be out amid the cold world's strife.
Soon we'll be sliding down the razor blade of life.
... Ready? ...
But as we go our sordid separate ways,
We shall ne'er forget thee, thou golden college days.
Tom Lehrer - "Bright College Days"
Ballistics

"'Once the rockets are up,
Who cares where they come down?
That's not my department,'
Says Werner von Braun."
Tom Lehrer - "Werner von Braun"
Family Relations

"There once lived a man named Oedipus Rex,
You may have heard about his odd complex.
His name appears in Freud's index
'Cause he loved his mother."
Tom Lehrer - "Oedipus Rex"
Love

"So say you love me here and now,
I'll make the most of that.
Say you love and trust me,
For I know that you'll disgust me
When you're old and getting fat."
Tom Lehrer - "Old and Grey"
Noel!

Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens,
Mix the punch, drag out the Dickens.
Even though the prospect sickens,
Brother, here we go again.
Tom Lehrer - "A Christmas Carol"

WARNING: Shameless Commercial Plug Alert!

Tom Lehrer is alive and as well as can be expected (given that he has abandoned Boston and is living in California). His albums and books are still available through Amazon Books. Run right over and buy a couple. Keep the torch of silliness burning. Remember...but for Tom, George Bush might have been elected President.
