Saratov is located south east of the East-European plain in the Lower Volga region. Once the capital of the Lower-Volga region, it is now the center of one of the biggest provinces in Russia. The Saratov oblast stretches for more than 100 thousand square kilometers. The population of Saratov is 920 thousand with an additional two million people living in 47 surrounding cities and 38 rural regions.
Saratov is an important railway junction, connecting the center of Russia with the Urals, Siberia and Asia. The Saratov international train connects the city with Warsaw and Berlin. Every day 200,00 tons of goods and 30,000 passengers use Saratov's transportation facilities.
The Saratov airport offers daily flights to Moscow, Saint Petersburg and other Russian cities.
The Volga river connects the city with Russia's main industrial centers, as well as with the Western Urals, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea and the White Sea. In summer five ships an hour arrive at the Saratov port.
Saratov has a well developed public transportation network. 450 buses, 270 trams, 200 trolleys and 1000 taxis service the city daily. One of the longest bridges in Europe crosses the Volga, connecting Saratov and its neighboring city, Engels
Saratov has always been known as the city of students. There are ten institutions of higher learning that offer degrees in economics, agriculture, veterinary science, law medicine, technological and agroengineering. A large body of highly students are ready for the work force each year. Saratov also features one of the oldest Russian Universities (founded in 1909) and the Russia Conservatory. Currently there are four institutes affiliated with the Russian Academy of science conducting research in Saratov: the Institute of Plant biology and Physiology of plants and Microorganisms, the Institute of the Social and Economic problems of the development of the Agro-industrial Complex, branches of the Radio and Electronics Institute and of the Blagonravov Engineering Institute.

Saratov is a city of "firsts". At the end of the nineteenth century the first public theater, the first circus, the first public museum in Russia (now the State Art Gallery) opened their doors in Saratov. The Art Gallery possesses an extraordinarily rich collection of old Russian, Western European, Russian avant- grade and modern art. Art experts call the gallery "the Volga Hermitage".

Recent economic and social changes have helped to create a boom of economic activity in the region. More than 5,600 private businesses are engaged in trade, construction services, manufacturing, food processing , etc. International partners are coming to Saratov to create joint ventures with local entrepreneurs. As a result more than 190 joint ventures are now operating in Saratov.
Saratov is one of the largest industrial center in the Volga region. Industry in the Oblast is represented by 2000 large enterprises. 37% of local industry is devoted to the production of heavy equipment, 15% to chemical production, and 13.5% to food production. Saratov factories produce a wide variety of consumer and industrial products. These items include: aircrafts, refrigeration equipment, diesel engines and generators, computer operated metal lathes, ball bearings, textiles, chocolate and footwear.
International development organizations are increasingly coming to Saratov to support the transition of the local economy. Currently four such organizations are active in Saratov: Peace Corps, VOCA, the Eurasia Foundation, and Chemonics International. Additionally, the German Council opened an office in Saratov.
