Student Life at IBA
Inspite of its spacious campuses and physical facilities, IBA Morning Program remains a small and exclusive school. The students and staff are on first name basis with one another and know each other well. Because of its small size, IBA inculcates a sense of belongingness and identity among the participants and staff members. The course load and the pressures of meeting deadlines, and the necessity of team work at IBA result in friendships among participants that last for lifetimes. They also promote a commitment to and support of the alma-mater that result in its strong and active alumni bodies.
The student body at IBA has its own well defined subculture and its own peculiar jargon, with nuances which are difficult to find anywhere else. The student body itself is a collection of participants from very diverse backgrounds. As a result of IBA's merit based admission policy, the students come from all parts of Pakistan, and from abroad. In the present student body, almost six percent of the students have had their pervious education abroad.
The work load at IBA is considerable and demands interaction among the students after teaching hours. Participants find themselves devoting all their time to IBA, their calendar becomes tuned to IBA and their social circle revolves around their IBA colleagues.
The atmosphere in the class rooms is informal, friendly and usually free of inhibitions.
Punctuality at IBA is next to religion and is observed with unfailing tenacity. During the past 14 years, not a single academic day has been lost at IBA. Even during the social gathering, IBA closely adheres to the schedule and expects the same from the students.
Students Bodies and Activities
IBA supports a socially active students body. There are four broad classifications:
The Business Administration Students Club (BASC)
The BASC organizes social events such as carnivals, graduation ceremonies, plays, sports, picnics and tours. The BASC consists of:
President (Director of IBA holds the office)
Vice President
General Secretary
Treasurer
Class representatives and various secretaries with specialized duties
BASC arranges a tour of the northern areas every year. IBA believes that this helps in promoting better understanding between the students and the teachers and removes any communication barriers that may exist between them. It also helps in bringing the students closer, thus making team work easier and happier exercise. One major objective of the tour is to expose the participants to the conditions prevailing in rural Pakistan. Besides, the tour also provides a much needed break after a year's pressure and hard work.
The BASC organizes graduation ceremonies which are well attended by eminent business and professional leaders, the faculty members, the graduating class, parents and students. Graduation ceremonies, to all students, are a great day to look forward to after years of hard work. They are very important for providing motivation to students under IBA's hectic schedule which wears them down.
From a modest start, IBA's dramatic society, popularly known as BATS (Business Administration Theatric Society), has grown from strength to strength and now presents plays with regularity. The IBA auditoriums have all the backstage facilities for holding such plays, and the plays are now quite a social event for outsiders as well as the students body. The BATS has been able to extract so much talent out of the small student body is reflective of the caliber of IBA students.
The BASC secretariat play an active role in providing healthy co-curricular activities for students. A variety of indoor and outdoor sports are arranged. Sporting events, organized on (graduating) class basis, raises considerable friendly rivalry among different (graduating) classes. Sporting events often attract a lot of partisan spectators and teams get considerable crowd support. The classes thus form very well knit social groups. These sporting events are also organized against other leading institutions like the Aga Khan University.
The BASC publishes a newsletter, known as IBA "Insight". The newsletter provides a healthy avenue to students for self-expression and keeps them aware of IBA activities.
Also, the BASC publishes the house journal of IBA "The Executive". This magazine has articles written on business by business leaders and IBA students. It portrays the practical dimension of what is taught at IBA.
The hostel has its own student body with students supervising the mess and the general maintenance of the hostel. Hostel students arrange their own sports and social activities besides participating with the general student body activities.
Social Welfare Program
IBA attempts to inculcate a spirit of social services among its students. A social welfare program has been started. Students visit "Katchi Abadies" (Temporary Settlements) to help their inhabitants to lead a better life.
Societies
There are various societies for different fields: for instance, Finance, Marketing, Management, Accounting, Economics and Communication societies. These societies regularly arrange seminars, debates, quiz competitions and other events to keep IBA's social calendar ticking, and put pressure on the students who squeeze some more activities into their already tight schedules.
The seminars arranged by these societies provide students an opportunity to learn from eminent business leaders and policy makers. The theoretical knowledge acquired by students is, thus, supplemented by the practical experience of these business leaders. IBA students get familiar with the business world before they actually step into it.
Clubs
There are various clubs i.e.: Hunting and Fishing, Astronomy, Computer, Music, Photography, Reading and Debates. These clubs actively organize projects and field trips to keep students busy.
Career Opportunities
Employers' interest in IBA graduates is high and is reflected by the fact that graduates get jobs within weeks of their graduation. A number of organizations place their job opportunities with IBA's placement office well before a class graduates. Employers' representatives visit IBA to interview the graduating class and students often have to divide their time between their studies and appearing for job interviews in the last month of stay at IBA. Students get attractive job offers even before graduation.
IBA's placement office keeps a liaison with the hiring organizations throughout the year. Graduate directories are sent to prospective employers to give notice of an outgoing batch and to introduce the graduates to the employers. The placement office also arranges interviews at the campus or at the employer's offices. It also coordinates the summer internships which are a requirement for the degree.
The internships also provide the students a chance to evaluate prospective employing organizations. It gives them an opportunity to get inside knowledge about the organizations and develop contacts within it. Students often decide their area of major concentration on the basis of their experience during the internship. Some students go back to their place of internship as full fledged employees. Students going through the BBA/MBA program complete two internships and, in the process, get to evaluate two organizations.

The alumni also serve as advocates for hiring new IBA graduates, and provide useful feedback to the students. The graduates have a strong commitment to their institute and give active support to their fellow graduates in obtaining job offers.
Graduates find employment in banking, development and company finance, consumer goods and industrial marketing sectors. Today, it is not just the multinationals who hire IBA graduates. Pakistani private firms and government agencies are becoming increasingly aware of the worth of MBA's and are employing them in great numbers.
Employment of IBA graduates abroad is not a recent phenomenon, but has attracted increased attention in recent years. IBA placement office is now gearing up to meet the increased demand in the Middle East market.
