Who Am I?
Hi! My name is Laura Feltes. Just this past May, I received my bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Millikin
University in Decatur, IL. I am originally from Oak Lawn, IL, a southwestern
suburb of Chicago. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Chemistry at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis...aka IUPUI. My dog Patches and I are now exploring the new world of living on our our own in Indy. So far its not treating us too bad. We certainly have met some interesting people!
I love animals, and I especially LOVE dogs! My parents have
a 12 year old Sheperd Mix named Princess, and a 6 year old Sheperd Mix named
Midnight. Last, but certainly not least, I have a 3 year old Pekingese/Chihuahua mix
named Patches. He's so adorable! (He's my favorite!) Visit my Puppy
Page for pictures of them!
Why am I doing this?
Many people have asked me why I have chosen to do this.
Well, I feel that sexual assault is a very important issue, that we all
need to be concerned with. It affects us all, and we cannot ignore
it. I believe that the only way things will ever change is if enough
people unite to educate others. I am amazed at the number of survivors
that I am continually meeting. I have chosen the internet as my way
of raising people's awareness, because I think it is a very powerful tool.
We can all be who we really are, without the fear of ridicule. We
can tell our stories, and show people who we are, and we do it comfortably.
Personally, I know how it feels to want to hide everything. Many
survivors don't want people to know, but at the same time, one of the best
ways to deal with the emotions is to talk about it. The internet
creates a tremendous support network for many people. I have made
many new friends through this expression of myself, and we all seem to
share a strong bond. We truly understand the pain that others have
gone through. Most importantly, we all share a common goal, which
is helping others.
