I am sorry to report that Alice passed away on November 29, 2001 at the age of 12 years, 1 month and 4 days. I will always miss her and am grateful to have been her mom for the last 2.5 years.
Alice is a 10 year old brown and white beagle (only 3% of beagles are Alice's color, so we feel especially lucky!) who came home to our house on May 24, 1999. The day we went to get her from her former person's house, we were so excited that we arrived 30 minutes early. The moment the door opened and this little bundle of brown and white energy came to us, licking and wagging her tail, I knew I was in love.
We spent over an hour with Alice and her person, getting to know both of them and hearing some great Alice stories. When she lived on the east coast, she used to corner rabbits, then let them go as soon as her person arrived to admire her work. While living in Nevada, she got too cold once the sun went down, and dug a hole in a chair to keep warm. Alice's first year was spent in a Fraternity house, where she learned the value of drinking beer.
While her former person loved her very much, she knew that she didn't have the time to give Alice the kind of attention, devotion, and walks that Alice needed. She interviewed 5 other people before she found us. She said that as soon as she heard my voice, she knew that it was going to work out, that Alice had found herself a new, loving home.
Our lease didn't allow us to have a dog, but I knew that our landlord was fond of us, and that one day we'd ask if we could have a dog. We had planned to wait until our lease was up for renewal, but while making Buddy's web page, I read about an 11 year old beagle named Annie who touched our hearts and needed a home on the National List of Adoptable Beagles. So I called the landlord and awaited her decision.
A week later, she said yes!!
I called Annie's owner, but by that time, she had found a new home with 2 other beagles and some loving people. So I called Linnea from the beagle rescue and told her we wanted an older dog. When she called back to tell me about Alice, I knew that we'd found our pooch!
