How I Met My Goober
June, 1995
I met Andrea in June of 1995. I had just graduated from college, and was recovering from a week with my parents.
We had driven all over Oregon, my parents and I, and I was finally headed
to San Fransisco for Pride weekend.
The flight from Eugene was not too taxing, the longest wait was getting off the plane at San Fransisco Airport.
I was sitting in the back of the plane, so I got pretty impatient waiting for people to get off the plane.
As I walked down the jetway, the sounds from inside the airport grew louder. I heard cheering as people
exited the plane. Always the smartass, I turned to the woman behind me and said 'oh, that's for me.'
When it was finally my turn to walk into the airport, I was shocked to see 8 lesbians,
all cheering for me!!
My friend Wen had organized a group to come to San Fransisco for the weekend. Among them
was my Goober, who at the time I called Andrea.
I was enthralled with her from that night, I even have a picture of her car behind us as we drove to the
place where we would be staying! We crammed into this tiny apartment in the Marina district.
The highlight of arriving was Kieren saying 'where's the bedroom?' when there was none.
After a wonderful week, I went back to Oregon, but I kept visiting Andrea about once a month.
It took us another year and some to figure out why I was visiting so much!
September 1996
Last September, I packed up my extremely lame, boring and low-paid life in Portland, and intended to move to Cincinnati, Ohio. I had an apartment, a job and a phone, not to mention my whole family waiting in Columbus.
My friend Dan had arrived from Boulder to drive across country with me. I found myself delaying the trip, until I realized that I
did need to stay here in California. It truly was lesbian love, since I moved in *before* we started dating!
Calling my mom to tell her of my decision was one of the hardest things I've done.
I said 'Mom, I have something to tell you, I'm staying here.' She said 'No, you're not.'
It was pretty rough for a while, but things are fine now. Mom knows that being here, and with Andrea is the best thing for me.
We go back and forth about who the Goober is, but anyone close to us will tell you that Andrea is the Goober.
For evidence of this, check out her home page. That's proof enough!
September 1997
This marks our one-year anniversary. This may not sound like a lot, but it marks a great milestone for us. Our relationship is the first healthy one I've ever had, the first
time where my partner is also my best friend. We don't know how we're going to celebrate it, we might just buy Nintendo 64 and
play video games all weekend.
November 1997
Well, we bought the Nintendo, and haven't slept a whole lot since then. We're getting geared up for the holidays, we've even started our shopping! I'm impressed! We're also working out almost every day. All is well with us.
December 1997
We just returned from our visit to Andrea's parents in New Jersey. It was not all that bad, I found myself having a decent time despite my objections. We had to sleep in separate beds, which was the worst part of the trip. Not too shabby. We're almost finished with our Christmas shopping, ready for the trip to Ohio later this month.
March, 1998
All is well. I turned 25 last week and we went out for a nice dinner at Gordon Biersch. We're getting geared up for a weekend trip to Reno in April, and I think we've decided to stay in our lame-o but inexpensive apartment. That means that we're actually unpacking! It's only been a year.
So things are going pretty well. We're learning the fine art of compromise, it's amazing what that does to releive tension.
Anyway, that's my version of how my Goober came to be my Goober.
I don't know how I got through life without those love bites.
