The Story of Weezy

Weezy came into my life quite by accident -- a friend bought a new car and didn't have a place to keep her. She wasn't registered in California, so it was impossible to leave her on the street without a valid license plate. For $46, she became mine on April 23, 1999.

Aside from her obvious high charm factor, at the moment, her most noticeable feature is the I Love Cops bumper sticker.

Restoring her to her former glory will be a challenge and a labor of love. I've never done this before -- hell, I'm happy that I can find the dipstick, but I'm so enthralled with this car that I'm going to give it a shot.

Here's the list of Weezy's current ailments:

First, the Exterior

Rust around driver's side mirror. Hopefully this isn't Death Rust

You just can't love COPS too much!

No side mirror on passenger side
Fixed! Got a new one 10/8/99!

Small rust spots. Hopefully this isn't Death Rust

Rusty front hubcaps, and they're original, but the rear ones aren't

The rear wheels are sport rims from a Beetle. While they're sporty, I'll be getting stock rims
Let's Go Inside

Protruding springs on driver's seat. This spring catches my butt every time I get in the car

Stuffing coming out of passenger's seat

Unsightly ripped vinyl on ceiling

Rear hatch cover ripped in half

No fuse coverreplaced on 5/2

Gear shift knob doesn't fit replaced with stock 12mm knob on 5/2
Issues from Front to Back

No cover over engine in the rear. This makes for a rather loud and smelly ride

Cracked windshield
On the Inside

Carpet is quite dirty, needs to be replaced

More grundy carpet

More grundy carpet, and clogged vent

Cracked molding. The trunk and rear hatch moldings were also cracked, but have been replaced

Other noticeable injuries:

Chrome missing on driver's side door replaced 5/2 thanks to the wrecked 72 at the San Jose Pick & Pull

While it may seem that Weezy is something of a basket case, the truth is that while she isn't pretty, she starts every time we go for a drive and she runs smoothly. The bulk of the work I need to do is cosmetic. You can't ask for more from a free car!

I took her to Bugformance for a tuneup. They worked some *serious* magic and she's running much more smoothly and quietly. It's nothing short of a miracle that I can have a conversation with my passengers while the car is running!

I haven't been too diligent about updating this page. This summer Weezie ran out of gas, and $350 later at Bugformance, she had a working gas gauge, working emergency flashers, but DIDN'T RUN!!! They tried to tell me the car is 'old' and these things happen but that hardly flies when 'old' cars are their speciality.

I now use the Buggy House in Santa Clara. He rules! Weezie has a new mirror, a working horn, and SHE RUNS!!

While I scored some great parts at the Pick & Pull this week, I am saddened that a beautiful original green 72 Squareback had to give it's life. My condolences to the owner...

A trip to the VW show in Vallejo this weekend followed by a trip to both Pick & Pulls in San Jose got me 2 stick shift knobs, molding for the trunk and rear hatch, as well as chrome for the driver's side door. All for a grand total of $4.97.

She's at the shop today, getting a tuneup and an oil change. I want to make sure she's in tip-top shape, so I'm leaving this sort of repair to the good people at Bugformance. I'll get her back tomorrow.

I'll be updating this site as I update Weezy. I figure that maintaining this site will keep me honest.
