and I have Fibromyalgia.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a "non-articulate rheumatic condition of wide-spread pain and fatigue" or a "soft tissue condition" standing for:
Fibro - Fibrous Tissue
My - Muscle/Ligament
Algia - Pain

Fibromyalgia then is a syndrome that is characterized by aching in the muscles, tendons & ligaments in at least 11 out of 18 different parts of the body. Pain is often accompanied by a non-restorative sleep pattern. Fibromyalgia has been referred as the everything hurts syndrome.

My Story

October 22, 1992 was a day like any other. I had work to do and made arrangements with my staff, to get it done. About 6:30 p.m I was heading east on a major road. The vehicles in front of me stopped rather suddenly and so did I. As I glanced into my mirror, I could see that the vehicle behind me was not going to...it crashed into my vehicle. It happened so suddenly that I didn't really have time to react. I had two passengers in the van with me, one in the passenger seat in the front and the other in the passenger seat in the rear. They both came out of the accident shaken but okay. Had there been anyone in the seat directly behind the driver, chances are very high that they would not have survived. The impact was massive, pushing the trunk of the vehicle into the back seat. The whiplash effect was enormous, causing the back of the front seat to break.

Upon getting out of the vehicle I immediately felt pain go up and down my back and left leg as if someone had pushed a rod up and down my spine. Shock does some very strange things and it would not be for a couple of years that the extent of the injuries received would fully be realized.

The result is that I can no longer work fulltime. As a direct result of this accident, I have Fibromyalgia for which there is no cure. There is only pain management and learning how to live a life around the pain.

Some people adapt better than others, but all of us have to deal with pain on a daily basis. Studies have been done to try and see who gets Fibromyalgia and if these people are different than those who don't get it. The results show that more women get Fibromyalgia then men - although men do get it too. The type of people who seem to get Fibromyalgia are people who have high expectations in the area of their performance, and expect a lot from themselves. Fibromyalgia seems to strike at a time when something significant has happened; an automobile accident taking the top spot but it has been noted to afflict some people after they have had a bad case of the flu. The key seems to be an incident which has happened that has caused some sort of shock to the body and the body can no longer rejuveniate or restore itself.

I'm just beginning to get this page together BUT, check out the information concerning Fibromyalgia from The Cafe of Dreams, you can reach them through the Fibromyalgia banner at the top of this page. Also check out the Links section below...

This page will continue to be under construction due to the fact that there is more and more information regarding Fibromyalgia becoming available all the time. Also, there are more people who live with the challenge of Fibromyalgia, coming forward to tell their stories all the time. I for one am glad that they are.
