On Hexing
There are lots of books and websites that will tell you why this is a bad idea (rebound, karma, etc.) and I agree with all of them but there are times when Justice demands registering a protest. It seems to me that the method that Murry Hope laid out in her book on Celtic Magic is the best way to deal with a situation where simply turning the other cheek seems the wrong answer.
Ms. Hope explains that the Irish Celts had a ritual form of poetry that was designed to be used in these situations.
The example she quoted was:
Without food quickly served,
Without cow's milk, whereon a calf could grow,
Without a dwelling fit for a man under a gloomy night,
Without means to entertain a bardic company, --
Let such be the condition of BresMy own example is as follows:
Without compensation for work well done,
Without interest in the company built,
Without recognition for the position held,
Without fair hearing of honest complaint,
Let such be the lot of (the guilty parties)
My personal rule of thumb to date has been that if I had grounds for a lawsuit (and in the case above I had actually contacted an attorney), then resorting to a hexing, (that asked only that the guilty parties should know the pain they inflicted on others themselves) seemed reasonable.
I personally haven't found any other situation that I think warrants asking for ill to befall another and I shudder to think of the ramifications of tugging on the weave of wryd with sufficient strength to actually call down something that wouldn't have happened anyway. It really should go without saying that basic metaphysical law states that if you have that kind of strength and use it you will attract the attention of an equal or greater power to yourself and the results will be unpleasant to say the least. If you think this is a warning for children or an overstatement then I would ask you two questions: Do you really believe and understand the principles of magic? Everything discussed here is based on the assumption that all life is connected and that will (where it harms none) is capable of influencing the woof and warp of the tapestry. Are you sure you have enough power to be dangerous? The second question is actually less confrontational than it seems. My warning may truly be an overstatement for most of us, since I have met only a handful of people in my life with sufficient power to actually be able to force the web of life into a direction of their own molding. Most of us (myself included) simply don't have the discipline and the focused will to do anything that requires that much effort all for the sake of harming another no matter how richly deserving we think it is.
And with that I will climb down off my soap box....
