The Consuming Fire

 "For behold, the day is coming,
burning like a furnace;
and all the arrogant and
every evildoer will be chaff;
and the day that is coming
will set them ablaze."
says the LORD of hosts,
"so that it will leave them
neither root nor branch."
Malachi 4: 1

Behold the LORD
lays the earth waste,
devastates it, distorts its surface
and scatters its inhabitants.
And the people will be like the priest,
the servant like his master,
the maid like her mistress,
the buyer like the seller.
the lender like the borrower,
the creditor like the debtor.
The earth will be
completely laid waste
and completely despoiled,
for the LORD has spoken this word.
The earth mourns and withers,
the world fades and withers,
the exalted of the
people of the earth fade away.
The earth is also
polluted by its inhabitants,
for they transgressed laws,
violated statutes,
broke the everlasting covenant.
Therefore, a curse devours the earth,
and those who live in
it are held guilty.
Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned,
and few men are left.
Isaiah 24: 1-6

Near is the great day of the LORD,
near and coming very quickly;
Listen, the day of the LORD!
In it the warrior cries out bitterly.
A day of wrath is that day,
a day of trouble and distress,
a day of destruction and desolation,
a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and thick darkness,
a day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities
and the high corner towers.
I will bring distress on men
so that they will walk like the blind,
because they have sinned
against the LORD;
And their blood will be
poured out like dust
and their flesh like dung.
Neither their silver nor their gold
will be able to deliver them on the day of the LORD'S wrath;
And all the earth will be devoured
in the fire of His jealousy,
for He will make a complete end, indeed a terrifying one,
of all the inhabitants of the earth.
Zephaniah 1: 14-18

For the wrath of God
is revealed from heaven
against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men
who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
because that which is known about God
is evident within them;
for God made it evident to them.
For since the creation of the world
His invisible attributes,
His eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly seen,
being understood through
what has been made,
so that they are without excuse.
For even though they knew God,
they did not honor Him
as God or give thanks,
but they became
futile in their speculations,
and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing to be wise,
they became fools,
and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God
for an image in
the form of corruptible man
and of birds and four-footed animals
and crawling creatures.
Therefore God gave them over
in the lusts of their hearts to impurity,
so that their bodies would be
dishonored among them.
For they exchanged
the truth of God for a lie,
and worshiped and served the creature
rather than the Creator,
who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave
them over to degrading passions;
for their women exchanged
the natural function
for that which is unnatural,
and in the same way also the men
abandoned the natural
function of the woman
and burned in their
desire toward one another,
men with men committing indecent acts
and receiving in their own persons
the due penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit
to acknowledge God any longer,
God gave them over to a depraved mind,
to do those things which are not proper,
being filled with all unrighteousness,
wickedness, greed, evil;
full of envy, murder,
strife, deceit, malice;
they are gossips,
slanderers, haters of God,
insolent, arrogant,
boastful, inventors of evil,
disobedient to parents,
without understanding, untrustworthy,
unloving, unmerciful;
and although they
know the ordinance of God,
that those who practice such things
are worthy of death,
they not only do the same,
but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
Romans 1: 18-32

"Therefore, wait for Me,"
declares the Lord,
"for the day when
I rise up as a witness.
Indeed, My decision is
to gather nations,
to assemble kingdoms,
to pour out on them
My indignation,
all my burning anger.
For all the earth will be devoured
by the fire of My zeal."
Zephaniah 3: 8

A jealous and avenging
God is the LORD;
The LORD is avenging
and wrathful.
The LORD takes vengeance on
His adversaries,
and He reserves wrath for
His enemies.
The LORD is slow to anger and great in power,
and the LORD will by no means
leave the guilty unpunished.
In whirlwind and storm is His way,
and clouds are the dust
beneath His feet.
He rebukes the sea and
makes it dry;
He dries up all the rivers.
Mountains quake because of Him,
and the hills dissolve;
Indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence,
The world and all
the inhabitants in it.
Who can stand before His indignation?
Who can endure
the burning of His anger?
His wrath is poured out like fire
and the rocks are
broken up by Him.
The LORD is good,
a stronghold in the day of trouble,
and He knows those
who take refuge in Him.
Nahum 1: 2-7

Who among us can live with
the consuming fire?
Who among us can live with continual burning?
He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity,
He who rejects unjust gain
and shakes his hands so that
they hold no bribe;
He who stops his ears from
hearing about bloodshed
and shuts his eyes from
looking upon evil;
He will dwell on the heights,
His refuge will be
the impregnable rock;
His bread will be given him,
His water will be sure.
Isaiah 33: 14,15
